For School Year 2020-2021
This fall, your child’s school will offer a combination of in-person and remote learning. You can choose from two options:
1. 100% Remote Learning: Opt in to have your child learn 100% remotely (all online, from home). To choose this option for your child, fill out and submit this form. If you are having difficulties completing this form online, call 311.
2. Combination of In-Person and Remote Learning: Your child can follow their school’s schedule, a mix of in-person days at school and remote learning days from home. Your school will be in touch about its schedule and programming plans in the coming weeks.
If you chose 100% Remote Learning but want to change your child’s preference back to Blended Learning, complete this form again by August 7.
After August 7, any family who chose 100% Remote Learning will have the option to change back to Blended Learning at a few specific times during the school year.
If no form is submitted for a child, the default for that student will be Blended Learning.

IMPORTANT UPDATE REGARDING REMOTE ONLINE LEARNING
Good afternoon MS 217 Family
We hope this email finds you and your loved ones well. In addition, we hope you have been able to safely enjoy the first month of our summer break.
Thank you to all of the members of our school community for their active participation in our discussions concerning the upcoming school year. Thank you to our students’ families for attending our MS 217 Town Hall meetings on July 7th and August 4th. Thank you to our School Leadership Team for their valuable feedback during our June and July meets. Thank you to our school programming team for meeting during the months of July and August to review NYS and CDC policy on school openings. All voices have contributed to the authoring of our plan.
Based upon all of our discussions it is clear the number one concern for our school community is keeping our school community safe. We have taken that consideration and utilized it as our main focus when reviewing guidance from NYS and the Federal government on school openings, as well as, in reviewing guidance from the NYC Department of Education. We also understand our school community seeks a school opening plan that continues to value academic opportunity and rigor for all students, and a school environment that recognizes the necessity of social emotional supports and learning. Thank you all for your voice, your suggestions, your questions, and your commitment to designing a school opening plan that honors all of our priorities.
As you know, the NYC Department of Education has asked our school community to identify a specific blended learning model that will be utilized to support students returning to our school building. Please know, there is no perfect model, just as there is no perfect plan that guarantees the safety of our school community from the devastation of COVID-19. However, the plan we have drafted is driven by our focus on safety, followed by consistency in academic and social emotional supports and learning. As always, together we will do our very best.
Our Model for School Opening:
How does the schedule work?
Groups A, B, and C:
Each class will be divided into 4 groups decided by the school. Groups A, B, and C will be comprised of students in the same class that have not opted for full time remote learning. These students will take turns, every two days, attending our school building. They will learn from home when they are not in school. For example, if your child has been placed in class 601 Group A then during the first week of school your child will be in our school building on Monday and Tuesday. (See the two red boxes called Group A on the line of Week 1 under Monday and Tuesday) Your child will be home learning remotely on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Monday of Week 2. Your child will then return to school on Tuesday and Wednesday of Week 2, and continue to follow the pattern of in school for two days and home for four days. We will provide a calendar for the year once we receive a start date from the NYCDOE. In addition, we will send home reminders monthly and weekly. Students that arrive to school on the wrong day will not be permitted to stay as doing so would create a very concerning safety hazard. The student’s family would be called and must pick the student up.
Students in groups A, B, and C will receive their class and group information as an email in their school Gmail during the week of August 31st.
*** We will make every effort to group siblings in the same letter group. Example: If you have a child in grade 7 and a child in grade 8 we will do our very best to place them in the same groups. For example, we would place your 7th grade child in Class 701A and your 8th grade child Class 803A. Notice how they are both in the same letter group. They would both come to school on the same days.
Students in group D are students that have completed the NYCDOE Learning Preference survey and have decided they want their child to learn from home full time. The deadline to opt your child for full time remote learning from home is Friday August 7th. If you are interested in opting your child for full time remote learning you may access the survey here: https://www.ms217q.com/home#h.anp7swo4dueh
For all groups: A, B, C, and D, our goal is to have all of the students from the same class learn together by the same teachers, however, this part of our plan will not be finalized until the end of August.
What are the next steps?
· Families will be informed via emails, Robo calls, and our school website at https://www.ms217q.com/ that our model was approved
· Students will receive their class and group information by email to their school Gmail account the week of August 31st.
· Incoming Grade 6 students will receive their school Gmail account information in advance of the class and group information email. Reminder to incoming Grade 6 families - In order to receive your child’s school Gmail information, you must first complete this survey https://forms.gle/SdwE2VgWqjF84pCy8 *** If you have already completed the survey there is no need to complete it again. Thank you.
Please review the model we have selected carefully. In addition, please review the NYC Department of Education plan that has been submitted to the NYS Education Department. The plan details safety precautions all schools must take in preparation for school opening and then must continue to maintain once school is open. You can access the plan here: https://www.schools.nyc.gov/school-year-20-21/return-to-school-2020/welcome-to-the-2020-2021-school-year
Please place Tuesday September 1st on your calendar for our next MS 217 Town Hall meeting at 6PM. During that meeting we will focus on our safety procedures and our academic and social emotional learning plans.
Be well. Stay safe. Please enjoy the remainder of the summer
