General Rules for Course Selection
We follow rules for course selection.
To get the IB Diploma, a student needs three Standard Level and three Higher Level courses.
To adhere to MOE requirements, students need to take Chinese as their group 1 subject, unless under very special circumstances. Since MDID is an english curriculum, we require that the students also take ENGLISH in either group 1 or group 2.
The most basic combination is to get one course from each subject group, but there can be exceptions from that. We will go through possibilities.

The first possible combination: one course for each subject group.
To follow MOE requirements, the student takes Chinese Language and Literature in HL.
To follow MDID requirements, the student who is in MYP ELA takes English Language Acquisition in SL.
The rest of the choices are: History SL for group 3, Biology SL for group 4, Math HL for group 5. and Visual Arts for group 6.
Three courses in SL: English B, History, and Biology.
Three courses in HL: Chinese Language and Literature, Math Analysis and Approaches, and Visual Arts.

In this example, group 2 Language Acquisition is dropped and instead, the student takes two Group 1 subjects: Chinese Literature and English Language and Literature. This is possible if the student is in MYP English Language and Literature.
Three SL subjects: Chinese Language and Literature, Math Analysis and Approaches, and Visual Arts.
Three HL subjects: English Language and Literature, Economics, and Chemistry.

In this example, group 6: The arts is dropped to take a second Group 2 subject. This is possible if the student has been taking Japanese in MYP.
Three SL subjects: Chinese Language and Literature, Japanese B, and Global Politics.
Three HL subjects: English B, Math Analysis and Approaches, and Physics.

This example drops Group 6: The arts, as well, and the student takes a second Group 3 subject: Psychology as an elective.
Business Management and Psychology are two group 3 subjects that can only be taken as an elective.
There are 3 SLs, and 3 HLs.

In this example, Group 6 is dropped for a second Group 4: Sciences course.
Computer Science is a group 4 subject that can only be taken as an elective, and is only offered in SL.
There are 3 SLs and 3 HLs again, as you can see.

In this example, the student drops both groups 2 and 6 for this course selection.
Three SL subjects are Chinese Language and Literature, Physics, and Math Analysis and Approaches.
Three HL subjects are English Language and Literature, History, and Chemistry.
