This unit was inspired by my wonderful youngest daughter, Esmé, who is the embodiment of kindness, understanding and compassion. We read 'Wonder' when it was first published in 2012 and, since then, have recommended it to everyone. However, it was only when the film version was released this year that she made me think about designing a unit for my grade 6s. I am only sorry she will not be in my class to take part!
This unit was developed for a Grade 6 MYP Language and Literature class but, as part of my Masters in Education degree at UMUC, it was also written to address the crucial area of global education. It is only by bringing learners together to learn and talk about different perspectives, differences and similarities, that we can we help cultivate the kindness we need for a sustainable and peaceful future. Many thanks are extended to my wonderful Professor, Dr Joe Wieczorek, who encouraged me to be proud of the differences I brought to our class.
