How do we use technology in the classroom?

Please ensure that you have given permission on the Parent Portal for your student to use the internet at school if you would like them to have the use of technology in the classroom.

If your student would like to bring his or her own device to class to support his or her learning I will do my best to facilitate this. Technology such as ipods, iphones, ipads /tablets and laptop computers can all be valuable tools to enrich your child’s educational experience if used correctly. I will work with your student so that they fully understand how and when these tools should be used in the classroom.

Students will be shown which online dictionaries should be used but use of sites such as Google Translate are not permitted. For this reason most assessments will be done in the classroom.

Classroom Expectations

In this class you will be expected to:

  • participate in all classroom activities. Your success is dependent upon your contribution and participation. You need to be able to work cooperatively with others as well as individually.

  • put complete effort into every project, assignment or daily activity.

  • ask for help when you need it and help someone around you if you find they are feeling confused. Learning often involves making mistakes and mistakes are best improved upon in a supportive environment.

  • be courteous, polite and considerate of others at all times.

  • be respectful of your school, of others and of the property of others.

  • be in class on time. If you arrive late to class please knock and wait patiently for someone to let you in at a time that will not disturb the rest of the class.

  • be in class. Excused absences are to be followed up with a note or phone call from a parent to the school. Students are responsible for catching up on work missed. Tests missed must be made up in a timely manner.

  • come to class with homework complete and ready to review.

  • have projects and assignments done on time and to the best of your ability. (All major assignments and test must be completed in order for you to demonstrate that you can meet the learning outcomes for this course.)

  • be prepared for class. You are to bring a pen and pencil, paper and binder to class. Your binder should be organized and should not have any loose pages floating around.

  • use technology appropriately in the classroom. (laptops, ipads, smartphones are fantastic tools if used in a respectful and appropriate manner)

Other notes:

You may bring a HEALTHY snack that does not make a mess or noise in class. You may only bring WATER to class. Please save your lunch for lunch time!

Remember, extra help is always available!!!

Core Spanish Curriculum

Introduction

The Spanish curriculum presents what students are expected to know, do, and understand in Grades 5 through 12. It provides teachers with a framework for engaging students in learning experiences through which they can become proficient users of Spanish, gain new perspectives, and engage with Hispanic communities.

Features of the Spanish curriculum

Integration of components

The Spanish curriculum represents an integrated approach to language acquisition. In this approach, the following components of language acquisition are viewed as interconnected rather than in isolation:

  • Reading, writing, listening, speaking, and interacting – These essential competencies are the foundation of language acquisition. As they rarely exist in isolation in authentic communication contexts, they are integrated throughout the curriculum. Each element of the curriculum supports the simultaneous development of multiple competencies.

  • Vocabulary and Grammar – With a focus on the purposeful use of language to communicate meaning, knowledge of vocabulary and grammar plays a supportive role.

  • Culture – Language is inextricably bound to culture. Culture is a vehicle for acquiring a deeper understanding of a given language, of others, and of oneself. Authentic communication always takes place in a cultural context, and language acquisition activities in the classroom must therefore be situated within such a context. As students explore the Spanish language and countries where Spanish is spoken, they simultaneously acquire both the language and an understanding of the many varieties of Hispanic culture – and the relationship between the two. This contributes to their appreciation of other cultures as well as their own.

  • Language-learning strategies – Language-learning strategies are seen as a vehicle for helping students succeed in their language acquisition journey and are integrated throughout the curriculum.

The BC Spanish curriculum aims to support students’ development as educated citizens through the achievement of the following goals. Students are expected to:

  • use Spanish as a form of self-expression

  • communicate with purpose and confidence in Spanish

  • explore a variety of Spanish-language texts from Hispanic sources

  • appreciate the interconnectedness of language and culture

  • expand their understanding and appreciation of other cultures

  • deepen their understanding of their first language and of their own cultural identity/identities

  • understand the educational, travel, and career opportunities that learning an additional language offers

Reporting Student Progress and Standards Based Assessment

Progress Reports

A progress report will be issued half-way through each quarter. These progress reports are intended to :

  • Give you an idea of the quality of work that has been done in class and to help you stay on top of homework completion.

  • Motivate students to hand in missing assignments or come in and make up missed speaking or listening activities

  • Encourage students to come in for help after school with concepts or work that is proving to be difficult for them. I am available to help students with their homework during our Options block however dedicated one on one help at this time is sometimes difficult. Students needing more help with their learning are encouraged to come in after school. I am available most days from 3:00 pm - 4:30pm however I often have meetings on Thursdays after school.

  • A final report will be sent home at the end of each quarter.

Standards Based Grading

Student progress with respect to curricular learning standards for thinking skills, communicating skills, and personal and social awareness will be communicated using performance standards. Information about standards based grading in will be sent home using the contact information that was provided to the school.
