About

Art is in my blood. I am not sure how it got there; maybe I was bit as a kid. More likely, it came from my mother—a quilter, a sewer, a pragmatic maker of useful beauty. My father was an avid reader, a thinker, a romantic. Between the two of them, something was created.

I tried to be an art major once. That did not work out—too many drugs. I pivoted, left the drugs behind, and earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science with minors in art, design, and mathematics. I followed that with a master’s degree in education, moved to Vermont, got married, and became a high school math teacher for fifteen years.

I never quite fit in. I do not care much for number crunching, and I am not especially good at it. What I love is the philosophy of mathematics—its ability to model the world, its elegance, and its strange beauty. Math, to me, is deeply creative: abstract and pragmatic at the same time, full of hidden structures and quiet revelations. It models the universe precisely, but it is not of the world.

For years, life was focused on teaching, raising our two kids, and doing the work of a family. Art went to the back burner. Eventually, through a mix of persistence and luck, I was able to switch from teaching mathematics to teaching art. I have been instructing art since 2018.

This allowed me to come "full spiral"—back to art, this time with a clear head. When my students draw, I draw. When they paint, I paint. Ceramics, metalworking, printmaking, glass work, jewelry making, encaustics... style, design, composition, technology—my job requires me to stay curious, to learn alongside them, and to keep moving across materials and processes.

My personal work has bloomed out of this environment. I think of it less as a career path and more as a relationship with something larger. As I see it, the universe has given me three projects to take on: The first is Homecoming - An Autumn Festival, completed in the autumn of 2025. The second is The Paradigm Project, which I am currently working on. The third has not revealed itself to me yet.
