TPACK is a framework that combines essential knowledge and skills for educators to seamlessly integrate technology into their teaching practice. By intertwining technological knowledge, pedagogical expertise, and deep content understanding, teachers can create engaging and impactful learning experiences for their students.
While TPACK is often compared with the SAMR Model, they are very different in scope and focus. The TPACK provides a map for understanding how to integrate technology into classroom instruction. Introduced by Punya Mishra and Matthew J. Koehler in 2006, the framework outlined three main forms of knowledge: Technological Knowledge (TK), Pedagogical Knowledge (PK), and Content Knowledge (CK). These three focuses are not mutually exclusive. In fact, the intersections of each are critical because the represent deeper levels of understanding (Rodgers, 2018).
Instead of viewing technology use as a hierarchical concept, the TPACK framework emphasizes incorporating technology knowledge into a broader set of essential knowledge bases that teachers need to excel in the classroom.
According to the TPACK framework, successful integration of technology into teaching requires a multifaceted skill set. To achieve effectiveness, teachers must demonstrate mastery in three key areas:
1. Content knowledge (CK): This entails a deep understanding of the subject matter they are teaching. It involves being well-versed in the core concepts, principles, and topics within the curriculum.
2. Pedagogical knowledge (PK): This involves mastery of teaching practices, processes, and methodologies. It encompasses a range of essential aspects, such as assessment techniques, lesson planning, classroom management, and effective teaching strategies.
3. Technology knowledge (TK): Teachers must possess the ability to work with various technology tools and resources relevant to their field. They should know how to leverage these tools effectively to enhance the learning experience and achieve educational objectives.
By integrating technology knowledge within this comprehensive framework, the TPACK approach acknowledges that teaching with technology is a challenging endeavor, requiring a complex combination of skills to ensure effective and meaningful learning experiences for students.
