Burnaby Central Athletics Fall 2022-2023 Update
Winter season is about to start with Basketball Games and Wrestling meets beginning last week of November! We are hosting season-opener games starting Dec. 7. This year our Snr Girls are ranked 6th in the Province and our Jnr Boys should be ranked in the top 10 as well. Both teams have had some early wins in tournaments. Our 8 Girls have already won their first league game over South. Our wrestling team is small but dedicated and our Gr 8 Boys, 9 Boys, Junior Girls and Senior Boys Basketball teams are all preparing to start their season on a good note. Here is a re-cap of the Fall Season:
Our Swim team had some great results at Provincials including a 5th (Kyra Lin, Cherry Zhang, Madison Le, Sophia Morton) and 13th place (Sophia, Kyra, Madison, Samantha Quan) finish by our Girls Relay Teams and Hayden Yeung had an amazing meet finishing 2nd, 3rd and 8th place in his events. Our Gr 9 Girls Volleyball team won the Burnaby New West District and Fraser North Championships. Our Snr Boys finished 2nd in the Fraser North's and finished 2nd in their pool at Provincials this weekend. The Senior Girls Volleyball team finished in the top 4 in the BNW League and went on to zones, finishing 2nd in their pool. The Junior Girls also made BNW Playoffs. The Gr 8 Girls took home 3rd place at zones. Our Senior Girls Cross Country team placed 9th at Provincials after winning the Senior Girls BNW Banner (Ella R, Robin R, Lulie M, Valentina B). Our Junior Boys Soccer Team played well all year and qualified for zone playoffs. Our Senior Boys were one game away from competing for the final birth to provincials but fell short. Our Grade 8 Boys rugby team united with Alpha to create the "EagleCats" and put up some good wins. Our Field Hockey team combined with Byrne Creek to play some fun matches. Thank you to all of our staff, community and student coaches for a great season! Also, follow our Instagram page for updates and photos (bbycentral_athletics).

After a tough 2 years with barely any sports Central had a very successful year winning 5 banners in our BNW leagues (Snr Boys Soccer, Snr Girls Volleyball-Prov Finalists, Jnr Girls Soccer, Snr Girls Soccer -5th at BCs. We also had 2 Fraser North Banner winners and four 2nd place finishers (Snr Girls Soccer, Gr 8, 9, 10 Girls Volleyball). Winners were our Snr Boys Volleyball team (Prov Finalists) and our Snr Girls Basketball team who were BNW/Fraser North Champs and finished 4th at BCs. Ten teams qualified for Provincials: Gr 8 Girls Basketball 2nd in BNW, 2nd at Invitational Provincials, Gr 9 Boys Basketball 2nd in BNW, 4th at Invitational Provincials, Cross Country -Snr Girls Team qualified for provincials, Swim Team qualified 13 athletes for the Swim Provincials, Wrestling qualified 3 wrestlers, Track & Field Team qualified for 37 events at zones then qualified 8 athletes to Provincials.
As a school we were able to field 32 teams with over 350 student athletes. That alone is a great accomplishment. This is great compared to the fact that we are only the 5th largest school in Burnaby. On behalf of our school we wanted to say thank you to all our, student athletes, coaches, sponsors, managers, and student volunteers and everyone who made this year so great. Without all of your hard work and you giving up countless of hours and volunteering your time, we could not provide an athletic program like we did this year.

Burnaby Central Athletics Spring Season Update 2019-2020
Due to the Covid 19 outbreak, BC School Sports has unfortunately made the decision to suspend the entire Spring Season. Central was poised to do very well before this unfortunate news. Our Grade 8 boys Volleyball team had a huge tryout which made it very tough to come down to a squad of 24. Our Grade 9 Boys Volleyball team was able to host our season opener tournament and made it to the final after going 2-1 in league play. The future looks bright for boys volleyball! Our Junior and Senior Badminton Team was able to secure a few wins before the closure of the league. Our Junior and Senior Ultimate and Netball teams all had good numbers at their preseason training and were looking forward to their season before the bad news. Our Senior girls soccer team was undefeated in the first 3 games and showed a lot of potential. Our Track and Field team had begun training and were poised to do very well in league meets. The Junior and Senior Rugby teams were preparing to begin their seasons. Our Senior Boys 7 aside team was poised to do very well in the league with 2 provincial Rugby team members in Lynden D and Sateki V. The Golf team had a good mix of returning golfers and new members. We also saw the resurgence of Central's Ball Hockey program under Mr. Colaiacovo.
Despite the unfortunate circumstances that we all faced this spring, overall Central had a great year and can be very proud of all of our student athletes. Teams were ale to earn Burnaby/NW District banners in Senior Boys Volleyball, Senior Girls Volleyball, Junior Boys Soccer, Grade 8 Boys Rugby and Grade 8 Girls Basketball. Our Grade 8 Girls Basketball and Senior Girls Volleyball were able to take home the inaugural Fraser North Zone Championships. Our Swim, Cross Country, Wrestling, Senior Boys and Senior Girls Volleyball teams all earned births to their Provincial Championships. The year was topped off by our Grade 8 Girls Basketball team winning the Invitational Provincial Championships. This win helped our Senior Girls Basketball Team earn a pre-season Top 10 ranking. Congrats to all of our athletes and especially our graduating players on a successful Athletic year. Good Luck to all our Grads! Stay tune for our virtual Athletic Awards Celebration.

The junior boys soccer team have had a good start going 2 and 1 in league play (thanks Mr. Katsionis and Mr. Prchal and student coach Omar C).
The Grade 8 Boys rugby team started the season with a big win over Byrne scoring over 50 points and are posed to do very well this year (thanks Mr. Dunse and Student Coaches Lynden D). Our Swim team is running smoothly and hope to qualify many athletes to the provincials (thanks to our Community Coach Ms. E Lin and Student Coaches Elva Y, Mitra S, Katrina Y). The Cross Country team has turned in a lot of great results from early meets and should also qualify many athletes for the provincials (thanks Mr. Leung and Student Coaches Tyler C, Kate O). The Field Hockey team has made a return to Central and are off to a great start (thanks Community Coach Ms. De Sousa, Student Coaches Jaya H, Diya S, and sponsor Ms. Kraemer).

Fall Season Update: Congratulations are in order for our Snr Girls Volleyball Team who, after receiving a top 10 ranking and becoming BNW Champs, defeated Riverside 3 sets to 1 Friday Night on our home court for the Fraser North Championships! The girls dominated the competition all week and were clearly the best team in the zone. Our Senior Boys, who also won a BNW banner last week, were fighting it out for their own zone championship down the street and rode a huge wave of success that led them to upset a few teams and earn a birth into the finals. Unfortunately they came up short to the same school, Riverside, falling 1 set to 3 but they were able to push the provincially ranked team to the end in one of their best performances of the year. A big shout out to the staff coaches, Ms. Snow and Mr. Hendry for preparing their teams so well. Both teams competed honorably at the Provincials on Nov. 28 to 30 with our Girls Team placing 11th and our Boys 19th in the province. Our Junior Girls Volleyball team finished in 6th place at their zones which followed up their 2nd place in Burnaby. Our Grade 8 and 9 girls team both finished 3rd in their BNW playoffs. Thank you Ms. Digeso, Ryan and our army of sponsors: Ms. Morabito, Ms. Dhaliwal, Ms. Hemmingway.

We should be very proud of our Senior Girls and Boys Volleyball teams who after winning their leagues brought home an 11th & 19th finish at the Provincials two weeks ago. A link to the Burnaby Now article on them can be found here: https://www.burnabynow.com/sports/wildcats-aztecs-ride-volleyball-rollercoaster-1.24028826
After a strong second half, the senior boys soccer team earned a birth in the BNW Final but lost a heartbreaker to eventual zone champs Moscrop (thanks Mr. Steko x 2... still in the running for coach of the year!). The Junior Soccer won the BNW banner defeating North 4-0 and then made it all the way to the zone semi finals. Congrats to Mr. Katsionis and Mr. Prchal for bringing home some hardware in your first year at Central. The Grade 8 Boys rugby team erased a 50 point deficit a week earlier by defeating Mountain for the school's 4th BNW banner this year by a score of 42 to 34 in a game that saw multiple lead changes (thanks Mr. Dunse). An example of the type of player we have here at Central was best demonstrated by when our captain, Owen P, stayed to receive the banner despite his re-arranged nose. Our Swim team qualified two relay teams for provincials and made the top 8 in the Freestyle Relay A Final (Yolanda Y, Elva Y, Yen Ni H, Sophia M, Mitra S) this weekend in Richmond. Central had 3 Cross Country runners at the provincials in Abbotsford on November 2 (Nicholas C, Christina H and Ryan G) who all performed admirably. 2 other runners qualified (Robin R, Kaitlyn H) but unfortunately could not take part. Thanks Mr. Leung for coaching and marshalling all season. The Field Hockey team were able to end their season on a great note after they defeated Mountain in their 3rd place playoff game (thanks Ms. Kraemer for stepping in to sponsor).
Burnaby Central End of Year Summary 2018-2019
Burnaby Central had another very successful year in terms of Athletics winning 6 banners in our BNW or Lower Mainland leagues including Bantam Boys, Junior Girls Volleyball, Track and Rugby. We also had many teams qualify for the Provincials including Cross County, Track, Junior Volleyball, swim, netball and wrestling teams. As a school we were able to field 33 teams including over 385 student athletes. That alone is a great accomplishment compared to the fact that we are only the 5th largest school in Burnaby. See Below for our season updates. On behalf of our school we wanted to say thank you to all of our, student athletes, coaches, sponsors, student volunteers, and managers and everyone who made this year so great. Without all of your hard work and you giving up countless of hours and volunteering your time, we could not provide an athletic program like we did this year. On June 11, we celebrated our successes with our Anual Awards Banquet. Our Team awards were presented and we recognized our Athletes of the Year and Athletic Service Award Recipients (see the Awards tab for a complete list).
