Burnaby Central Athletics 2025-2026 Update

 Central Athletics had a very successful year with over 458 student athletes and volunteers involved with 34 teams!  Our teams won 4 BNW banners, and sent 12 teams to the Fraser North Playoffs, and 8 teams to Provincial Championships! BNW Banner winners were the Gr 8 Boys Rugby team, Boys Wrestling team, Golf team & Senior Girls Netball team. Teams who finished top 5 at Zones include Snr Boys Rugby 7s, Snr Girls Volleyball, Snr Boys Volleyball Grade 9 Girls Volleyball, Snr Boys Badminton team, the Golf Team, Wrestlers Ben 1st, Edin 2nd, June 2nd, Logan/Risto 4th, Moise 5th.  Cross Country qualified 16 runners for zones. Swim team’s Boys Medley, Girls Freestyle and Mixed Medley Teams all qualified for zones. Track & Field included 1st place finishers: Alexis, Isabel (2 events), Cameron, Esha and a number of top 4 finishers: Lexi, Leah, Judah, Anthony, Ethan, Moses, Kingston, Eric and our Gr Boys 4x100 and 4x4, the Snr Boys 4x100 and 4x4 relay teams.  Finally, we had 8 teams qualify for Provincials this year:  The Swim team, Snr Boys Cross Country and Wrestling team.  The Track and Field team sent 23 team members to Provincials including our Gr 8 Boys 4x100 team which won silver.  Both Jnr and Snr Ultimate teams went to the Invitational provincials and did very well. 

We would like to congratulate the Ball Hockey team for winning the Tier 1 Provincials!  The team had to overcome some tough teams and went into the final down a few players including top point getter Jake and team leader Nic but after some clutch tactical moves made by Coach Coliacovo and great goal tending from Javyn, the team pulled it out winning 4-2 over Maple Ridge. We would also like to recognize Ben Musovic who won the Wrestling Provincial Championship in the 66kg weight class and also won the most Outstanding match award! This took a lot of hard work and support from coaches and teammates!  He later represented Canada at the U17 Pan Am Games as well! 

Our Swim team had a great year including our Boys Medley Relay team of Jerry, Ethan, Ryan and Cameron who finished 2nd at zones and our Girls 400 m Freestyle team of Tiffany, Henna, Kyra, Julia who finished 2nd at zones.  Jerry Ling finished 4th at zones in the individual 100 m breastroke and 5th in the consolation finals at Provincials, while Cameron Fan finished 5th in the 50 m breaststroke at zones.

Our Grade 8 Boys Rugby finished 1st in BNW and won the Banner.  Our Gr 8 Girls Volleyball highlight was their 3rd place finish at the Dome Tourney! Our other volleyball teams also had a great year including our Gr 9 Girls Volleyball Team who finished 3rd in BNW and 4th in Zones. Our Jnr Girls finished 7th in the league, and our Jnr Boys finished 8th.  Our Snr Girls Volleyball team went undefeated in league play and finished 4th at Zones barely missing out on Provincials.  The Snr Boys Finished 5th at BNW and at zones.  The Junior Boys Soccer team finished 4th in BNW while the Snr Boyss finished 7th.  

During our Winter Season, our wrestling team made some huge strides including hosting a duel meet, winning the boys banner and qualifying 6 wrestlers for Provincials which included Edin and June’s 2nd place, Logan and Risto’s 4th, Moise 5th place at zones and Leo qualified for the Gr 8 Provincials.  Ben Musovic was able to win his category at zones and then went on to be crowned BC Champion at provincials! 

In Basketball, our Gr 8 Boys finished 4th in the BNW and at Zones, Gr 8 Girls finished tied for 6th in the league and the 9s finished 4th in the league; all of these teams showed a lot of promise for the future! Our Jnr Boys Team had great results at the Big Ticket and West Van tourney while our Jnr Girls finished 7th in the BNW League.  Our Snr Girls won the Mount Douglas Tourney, finished 3rd at Districts and narrowly missed out on Provincials.  The Snr Boys finished 5th in a very competitive league but then finished 4th at zones after defeating South for the #2 seed out of the BNW in a thrilling revenge game.

In our Spring Season, The Grade 8 Boys Volleyball team finished in the top 3 at 2 tourneys while the Grade 9 Boys Volleyball team placed 4th in their league.  Our Snr Boys Badminton team placed 2nd in the BNW league and 4th at Zones narrowly missing Provincials. Individual highlights included:  Jnr Boys Doubles finished 3rd (Prompt/Mafruz) & theJnr Mixed Dbls (Prompt/Kelsey) finished 3rd.  The Snr Girls Soccer team, which was very young with a number of grade 8s starting, finished 3rd in league play. Our Senior Girls Rugby team finished 7th at zones but were the top Burnaby team defeating North and Mountain even after playing short a player for most of the tourney.

Our Snr Boys Rugby Team did great in their 1st year of playing 7s rugby and  finished 2nd at zones just missing out on Provincials.  The Junior Rugby team had a huge comeback win to start the season and then defeated the other Burnaby schools at the year end 7s tourney. The Senior Netball team won the BNW Banner and finished 2nd at Provincials narrowly losing by 1 point. Junior netball team members are poised well to help the senior team next year. The Senior Ultimate team finished 6th in a very competitive zones and 8th out of 32 teams at the Invitational Provincial, while the Juniors finished 5th in their league and did great at several tourneys!  

The Track team qualified 23 athletes and 5 relay teams.  They also had several 1st place finishes at zones including Alexis, Isabel, Esha, and Cameron. Provincial highlights were the Gr 8s silver in the 4x1 and the number of top 20 finishers including the gr. 8 boys again in the 4x4, Judah in the race walk, Cameron and Kingston in the 400, Snr Boys 4x1, Izzy in the Javelin and Hammer, and Esha in the Discus. The Golf team had a huge win over North to take the BNW banner and placed 4th at zones just missing out on Provincials. The Ball Hockey Team finished 2nd in the league after earning a spot in the final with a last second win over North.  Then as we showed, they went on a run at the provincials and were able to take gold.
