The field trip follows a transect from an igneous intrusion through metamorphic aureole of multiple protoliths to another intrusion (download the Google Earth KMZ file of stops)
There are nine field stops for this virtual field trip, all of which can be accessed from the home page or from the top menu bar and drop-down menu
The field stops have been created to help you answer the questions in your field trip worksheets; start your work at field site one and then work through the sites in order
For each field site, make notes in a field book which includes looking at the images available and creating annotated field sketches and recording your geological observations
By participating in this Hartley virtual field trip and extension activities in a related case study, you will develop the skills to:
Recognise and describe a range of metamorphic and igneous rocks and minerals
Understand the processes of formation of igneous and metamorphic rocks
Produce a simple map, topographic profile and a geological cross section of a field site
Interpret a geological cross section and map to determine the geological history of an area
Apply sound scientific methodology to understanding a field site
Demonstrate the capacity to communicate scientific ideas clearly and at a level appropriate to the audience
Internet access & a computer or other way to access this website
Field trip worksheet (download)
Field notebook to make sketches and take notes (this could be a physical notebook or a document on your computer to which you could add photographs of your annotated sketches, etc.)
Coloured and lead pencils, erasers, ruler, protractor etc.
A helpful pocket guide that contains a summary of key concepts in first year geology (download)
Case study information to complete the extension exercises is available on iLearn for EESC1150 students
For the Hartley virtual field trip, you will need to produce/complete:
Pre-Work completed before the day of your trip (allow ~6–8 hours and demonstrate completion by posting a reflection and your work to a "Hartley Pre-Work" blog entry in the EESC1150 iLearn page)
Field trip worksheet (demonstrate completion by posting a reflection and your work to a "Hartley Worksheet" blog entry in the EESC1150 iLearn page)
Field note book (demonstrate completion by posting a reflection and your work to a "Hartley Field Note Book" blog entry in the EESC1150 iLearn page)
For the EESC1150 students completing the extension exercises for the case study you will additionally complete the following three items and submit to your practical tutor:
Geology and Economic resources exploration map
Topographic profile and geological cross-section
History of the Hartley area
