As is the case in many high schools across the country, the National Honor Society is one of the most prestigious clubs that a Junior/Senior student could belong to. Membership in the National Honor Society comes with a variety of perks including:
Recognition as an academic and civic leader in the school
An impressive accolade for student resumes and/or college applications
Access to exclusive scholarships to be used for post-secondary pursuits
Opportunities to partner with like-minded peers and faculty members actively working to improve the Islander Community

Once a student has been nominated for the incoming cohort, they are expected to adhere to the following expectations:
Maintain a grade point average (GPA) of 3.4 or above for the duration of their Junior/Senior years
Attend monthly, after-school meetings (approximately 60 minutes each). Regular attendance at these meetings is a requirement for remaining in NHS
Completion of additional community service hours above the regular 20 hours required by Middletown High for graduation.
Participation in club-sponsored community service opportunities (as decided by the membership on an annual basis)
Active participation in the NHS Peer Tutoring program
Active contribution to the annual chapter project

Junior Year (February): Initial correspondence is sent out to nominees shortly after the close of semester one. Nominees accept/decline their nomination.
Junior Year (March - April): Prospective members (nominees) attend general membership meetings and participate in all NHS club activities. Prospective members must maintain a minimum 3.4 grade point average (GPA) or better and in good disciplinary standing, and have regular school and NHS meeting attendance to remain active.
Junior Year (May): National Honor Society Induction Ceremony; Prospective members are sworn into the club. Prospective members become part of the acting membership.
Junior Year (June): Final meeting of the year (first meeting for Juniors as active members). Elections for NHS Class Officers are held.
Senior Year (August): New membership assists with beginning of the year activities such as Freshman/New Student Orientation and the First Day of School
Senior Year (September-June): Regular participation as a member of NHS continues.
