Let's talk about some of the questions in the above Cheat Sheet:
Is there a formal policy in place guiding teachers and students in GenAI use?
Currently, Mashpee Public Schools does not have district-wide policies or procedures in place regarding the use of generative AI (GenAI). However, we recognize the importance of establishing clear guidelines to ensure safe and effective use. Teachers in the district have begun incorporating language into assignments to clarify expectations surrounding GenAI use. To address this on a broader scale, MPS plans to form an AI Task Force that will take on the responsibility of developing comprehensive policies. These may be stand-alone AI policies or embedded guidelines within existing frameworks. Our approach will focus on balancing innovation with safety, academic integrity, and equitable access.
How is GenAI being used in the classroom, and how is it meaningfully enhancing learning?
Our use of generative AI in classrooms is limited but purposeful. For example, students have access to AI features in Canva, which allows them to create visually engaging content to enhance their learning. Some teachers also use Brisk Teaching to improve feedback mechanisms. While teachers have access to tools like Magic School and Gemini, students do not have access to these or other tools unless the providers have signed a Data Privacy Agreement (DPA). Additionally, a cohort of educators is undergoing year-long professional development to understand how GenAI can enhance teaching and learning. Through this program, teachers are exploring tools such as large language model generators, AI productivity tools, and creativity-focused image generators. These efforts are paving the way for thoughtful integration that aligns with district goals and priorities.
What personal data is collected by AI tools, and how is it being protected?
Unfortunately, at this time, most AI tools collect considerable personal data and do not prioritize the protection of K12 student data. Protecting student data privacy is a top priority for Mashpee Public Schools. The district does not allow the use of AI tools for students unless the provider has signed a legally vetted Data Privacy Agreement (DPA) through the Student Data Privacy Consortium. This agreement ensures that liability for any breaches is shifted away from the district. Furthermore, MPS blocks AI tools that do not prioritize student data privacy or that collect data for advertising or third-party sales. We actively educate students about the risks of using AI tools independently on their personal devices, discouraging the sharing of personal information with companies that fail to meet our strict standards.
How does the school handle the risks to academic integrity, and what is the procedure for suspected misuse?
Mashpee Public Schools takes academic integrity seriously. While the district has yet to develop formal policies, educators are taking proactive steps to mitigate risks. Teachers are embedding expectations into their assignments to prevent misuse of GenAI tools for cheating or plagiarism. As part of our efforts, professional development programs are equipping teachers with strategies to identify inappropriate uses of AI. Suspected cases of misuse are currently handled at the classroom level with support from school administrators, with further guidance expected as district-wide policies are developed. The upcoming AI Task Force will play a key role in creating procedures that address these challenges comprehensively.
How does the school ensure that GenAI does not replace critical skills development?
Mashpee Public Schools is deeply committed to fostering the skills outlined in the Portrait of a Graduate, ensuring that our students grow into purposeful communicators, engaged citizens, resilient individuals, empowered knowledge seekers, and critical thinkers. While generative AI tools can be valuable resources, they are used thoughtfully to supplement—not replace—these essential skills.
For example, tools like AI-powered feedback mechanisms can enhance a student’s writing process by offering suggestions, but the emphasis remains on developing their ability to express understanding, reason effectively, and communicate clearly (A-1, A-5, E-2). Similarly, AI supports learning by providing varied resources for research and exploration, aligning with the district's focus on curiosity and active learning (D-4, D-5). However, Mashpee Public Schools ensures that students actively engage with their learning journey, cultivating independence, adaptability, and resilience in the face of challenges (C-4, E-4).
AI tools are integrated in ways that uphold the district’s core values, empowering students to think critically, collaborate meaningfully, and embrace diverse perspectives. By preserving the balance between technology and foundational skills, Mashpee Public Schools ensures that its students are prepared to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
Are teachers being trained to use GenAI tools effectively, and how are they guiding students in responsible GenAI use?
Yes, MPS is investing in teacher training to ensure effective use of generative AI tools. A cohort of educators from grades PK-12 is participating in a year-long course to explore AI topics, ranging from responsible and ethical use to addressing bias and misinformation. This training empowers teachers to integrate AI tools thoughtfully while guiding students in responsible practices. As we progress, these educators will likely take on leadership roles within the AI Task Force, helping to shape district-wide strategies and best practices for teaching with AI.
