UDL is a lens we can apply to MIM to support the needs of students.
Learners vary in how they navigate learning environments, engage with tasks, and express what they know. Some may prefer writing over speaking, while others do the opposite, and preferences can change depending on the context. Expressing ideas also requires strategies, practice, and organization—areas where learners differ widely. Because no single method works for everyone, providing multiple options for action and expression is essential to support all learners effectively.
Strategic Networks:
The HOW of Learning
Learners vary significantly in how they interact with the learning environment, approach tasks, and demonstrate their knowledge.
These differences, including those stemming from disabilities, must be respected and accommodated.
Learners may have preferences for different modes of expression (e.g., written vs. spoken).
Strategy, practice, and organization, essential for action and expression, also vary among learners.
Therefore, providing multiple means of action and expression is crucial for inclusive and effective learning.
Options for Interactions
Learning materials and environments should be designed to support diverse interaction and navigation needs. Traditional formats like printed textbooks and rigid classroom layouts can create barriers for some learners, including those with physical disabilities, learning challenges or executive functioning needs. Materials should integrate seamlessly with assistive technology. Likewise, flexible physical spaces with adjustable seating and tools can enhance engagement. Providing multiple ways to interact with learning tools and environments ensures that all learners can navigate, respond, and participate effectively.
Options for Expression & Communication
No single form of expression works for all learners or all types of communication. Some media may be less effective for certain learners or learning goals, making it essential to offer multiple ways for learners to express their knowledge and ideas. Providing diverse tools for communication, creativity, and composition ensures that learners can share their thinking in ways that align with their strengths. Gradually releasing scaffolds helps build fluency and independence.
Options for Strategy Development
Executive functions, which enable purposeful and skillful action, are crucial for learning. These functions help individuals develop strategies, set and achieve goals, and adapt based on progress. UDL practices enhance executive functioning skills by scaffolding both lower-level skills to reduce cognitive load and higher-level skills for more effective learning. This includes supporting learners in setting meaningful goals, planning for challenges, organizing resources, monitoring progress, and fostering inclusive learning environments.
Domain 2: Instruction: The emphasis on promoting student independence through instruction, modeling, and reinforcement of developmentally appropriate skills aligns with UDL's principle of Multiple Means of Action & Expression. Providing learning experiences that gradually increase in challenge allows students to develop their skills and express their learning at their own pace.
Domain 3: Assessment: Encouraging diverse methods of assessment and allowing students to demonstrate learning in a variety of ways resonates with UDL's Multiple Means of Action & Expression. By recognizing that learners differ in how they navigate the learning environment and express their knowledge, MIM promotes flexible assessment practices that cater to diverse learners' strengths and preferences.
