Questions:
How many students are in our classroom?
We have 22 students in our classroom. We have 8 boys and 14 girls.
What day do we need to return library books?
Please bring back library books on Friday morning each week as we check out Friday afternoon!
What do I need for PE/Music?Art Days?
Students have 20 minutes of PE and 20 minutes of music each day, for a total of 40 minutes of specials. Closed-toe sneakers are required for PE, but students may wear other shoes to school and change into sneakers for PE if they prefer.
Art is on Wednesdays. We will try our best to stay clean, but I would recommend wearing clothes you don't mind getting a little paint/other materials on!
What homework does my student have?
The only other homework your student will have is work they may not have completed in class.
Practicing spelling words and reading at home every night is a must!
Is there snack-time?
Yes, snack time is every day from 2:00–2:10 PM. Please send a snack with your student to enjoy during this time.
Can I bring treats for my students' birthday?
Yes, you may bring treats on your students' birthday. If your students' birthday falls on a weekend you can bring treats any day near it! Also, if you have a summer birthday feel free to bring treats on their half birthday or near the end of May! If possible, send me an email in advance so I can ensure students have time to eat the treats and celebrate. Treats must be store bought; they cannot be homemade.
What clubs can my students join?
Unfortunately, 1st grade does not have many clubs. Although, this year we are allowing K-2 to join study center. This is after school Monday and Thursdays from 3:30-4:15. Students will receive small group help with phonograms, spelling, reading, and math! Another club is Art Club. Art Club is once a month on a Monday after school from 3:30-4:15.
What can my child bring from home?
Students may bring learning supplies (from the supply list) including pencils, markers, erasers, etc. Please do not bring pens or other tools that may be distracting. Toys, apple watches, and other electronics must stay at home. Students are encouraged to bring chapstick for the winter months!
When are the MAP test dates?
We will take the MAP test once in the fall, winter, and spring. I will inform you on the specific dates when it comes closer!
What are poetry recitations?
We have poetry recitations every quarter. Your student will memorize and recite a poem to the class. A rubric along with the poem will be sent home every quarter. They will be graded on their voice level, eye contact, ability to memorize, state the author & title, and facing the audience. This helps build their confidence to share in front of their peers.
When are conferences?
We have our parent conferences in October and March. You will sign up for a 15 minute slot through parentVUE/synergy.
How can I help my student at home? How can I learn Spalding too?
Check out resource links back on the home page. It has resources for your students to use at home including spalding and MAP testing preparation (IXL). Each week I will put the phonograms and spelling words in our weekly newsletter that will be tested on! If you need additional support please reach out as I would love to help. New families at CORE, we have spalding cards available for you.
What is IXL?
IXL is a MAP test preparation site. Students work on skills at their level in many subject areas including math, reading, and science. If I were to recommend one thing to use at home, it would be the app! Within the first few weeks of school, I will send home your students log in information so they can practice at home. We will be participating in an IXL challenge where students earn prizes in the classroom based on participation on IXL in class and at home.
