KMS Community Connection

August 31, 2018

From Mr. Smith...

It is hard to believe that it is already the third week of the year!!

Football, volleyball and cross country have started and all teams are preparing for their upcoming games/meets. Students have done an outstanding job using their new laptops. We have wrapped up our pre-teaching of skills and the students are using their laptops daily!

During advisement, your student has participated in the following activities :

  • Kiewit Cares (PBiS) Behavior Matrix
  • KMS Handbook and Expectations
  • Recognize-Respond-Report (Bullying Curriculum)
  • #BeKind Day and Curriculum
  • Friday Follies (Team-Building Activities)

Also, we would like to take this opportunity to ask for your help with supervision of our middle school students at high school football games. Ideally, it is best to stay at the game with your child to help with supervision. If you do drop your child off, please be sure they call you at the beginning of the 4th quarter to arrange a ride. Students will not be allowed to stay at the stadium after the game ends. If a student’s conduct at the game is inappropriate, they will be asked to leave. This can pose a problem as our students cannot drive. We just want to be sure that while supporting our high school players, we ensure a safe and successful experience for our students. There has been some confusion about students paying to get into games. Students are required to pay $4 to get into the football game.

Finally, we would like to encourage everyone to follow KMS and the Millard Public Schools on Facebook and Twitter. We use these social media sites to show all the fun things that are happening at our schools. If you use Twitter, please follow @MPS_Kiewit or like us on Facebook. Also, if you have not bookmarked our website already (kms.mpsomaha.org), please consider it. Our website is packed with information about our school including upcoming club meetings.

Thank you for sharing your students with us each day! We appreciate your partnership is developing our students into outstanding members or our community!

Sincerely,

Marshall Smith

KMS Principal

From the Counseling Office...

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year from the counseling department.

Mr. Ryandean Birge - Grade 6

Mrs. Lisa Meister - Grade 7

Mrs. Tristen Hook - Grade 8

Our district theme this year is #BeKind. The Kiewit students have had an opportunity to talk about and participate in activities revolving around our #BeKind theme.

Kindness is defined as the quality of being friendly, generous and considerate. The students will have many opportunities to practice kindness throughout the school year.

This is a great time for you to have a discussion about what kindness looks like, and feels like, in your home as well as in our community.

Thanks for sharing your children with us. Kindness can be contagious let’s all work together to spread kindness throughout Kiewit and our community.

SUICIDE PREVENTION PRESENTATION

During the months of September and October the Kiewit counselors and school psychologists will work with students to educate and continue the discussion of depression and suicidal thinking. Millard Public Schools has taken the initiative to help prevent student suicides and promote mental health through utilizing our district Suicide Prevention Program. Not only will students be educated on the warning signs of depression and suicidal thinking but also discussing the presence of resiliency factors that can lessen the potential risks that lead to suicidal ideation and behaviors. In order to empower our students we will highlight the fact that once a child or adolescent is considered at risk, schools, families, and friends can and should work to build protective factors in and around the youth.

Rest assured, if there is any need for parental contact after students participate in these activities, a counselor will follow up with you. If you prefer your child not receive this information please contact your school counselor by phone. Parents may opt their child out of the presentation by contacting their child’s counselor at 402-715-1470.

Attendance Phone Number: 402-715-1470

If your student is going to be absent for the day, or any part of the day, please contact the office as soon as possible to let us know. You may also send an e-mail to kjturgeon@mpsomaha.org.

Without notification to the office, absences will be coded "Unexcused - no call from parent”. Multiple unexcused absences could lead to the involvement of the county attorney per district policy.

If you need to fax a doctor or dental note, our fax number is 402-715-1490. Please send it to "Attention Kali".

Homework requests should be directed to your child's teachers via e-mail. The Staff Directory is located under the Parent tab at the top of the website. Homework can also be found under the Homework tab, also located on top of the web page.

Please Note the Following Items:

  • If you know your child will be picked up during the day for any reason (appointment, vacation, etc.) , please contact the office as soon as you can in the morning so that we can get a pass to your student. This is appreciated and a much less disruptive way of pulling your student out of class. If anyone other than a parent or guardian is picking up the student, we must have verbal permission from the parent or guardian and the person’s name.
  • Please let your student know that if they are not feeling well during the day, they need go to the nurse’s office. The nurse/health para will note the student’s symptoms. If the student goes home, they must be checked out through the nurse’s office.
  • If your child needs to see a teacher before school (Tu.-Fri.), they must check in at the office by 7:20 am when we make an announcement for those teachers. They are allowed to go back before and after the 7:20 announcement as long as they have a yellow corridor pass from their teacher.
  • If you need homework for your student due to illness or vacation, you will need to e-mail the teachers and they will bring it up to the office after school.
  • Entry into the building during the day is only through the south doors (front of the building). If you are picking up a sick child, you will go to the nurse’s office and pick them up there. For any other business, please come to the main office.
  • You can view the announcements your student hears each day on our “Daily Announcements” section on the Kiewit website. It is located under the “Students” tab of our home page (http://kms.mpsomaha.org).
  • If your student is riding a bus home with another student (other than their normal bus route or a student that does not normally ride the bus), we must hear from the riders parent/guardian by 2:45 pm giving permission. The office will then give the rider a permission slip to give to the bus driver.
  • If you ever wonder whether a practice/game has been canceled, we will display the information on the home page of our website by 2 pm. We will only display the information if it has been canceled or the time has changed; we will not display any information if practice/game is on as scheduled.

What does #BeKind mean to you?

Mia said:

"#BeKind means to Be Kind! We can be kind by doing kind things like picking up books for someone if they drop it, putting a nice note in someone's locker, and complimenting someone on what they are wearing! We can all work together as a community and do those things because people always remember that we do those nice things. We can make a difference in people's lives. I think that all of us have kindness inside of us and we just need to let it out! That is what #BeKind means to me. Life is short, But we can make it amazing!"

McKenna said:

"To me #BeKind means that you should always include and help other people. If you are truly being kind you should be able to recognize when other people are not, and understand what to do to help them be kind by stepping in and sticking up for others."

Eshaan said:

"I think that #BeKind means that we should all support each other when we need to, and even when we don’t need to. Being kind shouldn’t be a matter of obligation, but rather a matter of genuine altruism. To take an example from my personal experience, I am a cellist. Because my instrument is so large, it is often a struggle to open doors without dropping it. There have been some occasions when I am going through my usual struggle, and another student kindly helps me by opening the door. However, there have been other occasions when another student walks by without a second thought. Just as many droplets of water can fill an ocean, small acts of kindness can go a long way."
