What is IB?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a globally recognized framework for students ages 3–12 that nurtures curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning. At Aldrich Elementary, the PYP helps students grow not only academically, but also socially and emotionally, preparing them to thrive both in the classroom and beyond.

Rather than simply memorizing facts, students learn how to ask meaningful questions, think critically, solve problems, and make connections to the world around them. Learning is organized around six transdisciplinary themes that encourage students to explore big ideas through hands-on, inquiry-based experiences that connect multiple subject areas.

The PYP is Built on Four Key Principles:

🧩 The Learner Profile: Students develop important character traits—including being caring, principled, open-minded, and reflective—that support success in school and in life.

🌟 Student Agency: Students have a voice and choice in their learning, helping them build confidence, independence, and ownership of their growth.

🌎 Global Citizenship: Students develop an appreciation for diverse perspectives and cultures while learning to make a positive difference in their local and global communities.
