Expectations & Guidelines

What is Expected of you? 

As a member of the National Honor Society, we expect you to follow these guidelines: 

Rules for Membership:

• Maintain GPA of 3.4 (including laude coursework)  

• Complete all service hours for Volunteering and Tutoring 

• Attend all meetings 

• Stay up to date for announcements

• Implement the four pillars of NHS- Scholarship, Character, Leadership and Service

Hour Requirements:

• Complete all required hours by May 1st for both Volunteering and Tutoring

  • JUNIORS: 20 total- 15 volunteering, 5 tutoring

  • SENIORS: 25 total- 15 volunteering, 10 tutoring (effective beginning class of 2024) 

    • If you lacked any hours last year, they transfer over to this year! 

Volunteering 

• • **They do not count towards graduation community service requirements!**

  • JUNIORS: 20 total 

    • Project leader = 5 hours

    • Project participation = 5 hours

    • Individual = 5 hours

    • Tutoring = 5 hours

  • SENIORS: 25 total 

    • Project leader = 5 hours

    • Project participation =5 hours

    • Individual = 5 hours

    • Tutoring = 10 hours (effective beginning class of 2024) 

    • All your hours from last year for volunteering count as individual hours. Therefore, 15 last year and 5 this year= 20 total. If you lacked any hours last year, they transfer over to this year for individual hours! 

    • If you got over 20 volunteer hours last year, they count towards project participation hours 

    • **MAX OF 2 HOURS FOR DONATING TOWARDS INDIVIDUAL HOURS PER YEAR ($10=1 hour, $20=2 hours) **

Steps for being a project leader (AKA creating a project) (Project criteria document):

1. Fill out and turn in the Project proposal sheet to Mrs. George (if George posted the opportunity, you don’t need to complete this.)

2. Complete Pre-project meeting (if George posted the opportunity, she will schedule you for a meeting)

3. Complete project

4. Complete Post-project meeting

5. Fill out and turn in project leader hour form to either Khloe or Mrs. George

6. Fill out and turn in volunteer hour forms from all of your volunteers to either Khloe or Mrs. George

   • These sheets should all be handed in together

Steps for participating in a project: 

• 1. Sign up for project through google classroom post

  2. Fill out and turn in volunteer hour form to either Khloe or Mrs. George

Steps for individual volunteer hours:

• 3. Fill out and turn in volunteer hour form to either Khloe or Mrs. George

• Look at individual hour ideas document (located in google classroom) for ideas on how to complete and HOUR RESTRICTIONS (some are listed below for reference)

• **LEADERSHIP CLASS PROJECTS OR HOURS DO NOT COUNT!**

• **HOURS FROM SUMMER DO NOT COUNT (UNLESS PREVIOUSLY ARRANGED)!** 

• **Free rice does not count** 

• Only can count hours from other clubs if it was joint fundraiser/event with NHS 

  • Ex. SAAC hours from projects wouldn’t count if it wasn’t in relation with NHS

• All hours are recorded by the NHS board and can be found in  your grade’s spreadsheet in google classroom! 

• Where do extra hours go?: project leader →project participation, project participation →individual hours, tutoring→individual hours, individual hours →overflow (doesn’t go anywhere) 

Tutoring 

• • JUNIORS: 5 total

  • SENIORS: 10 total (effective beginning class of 2024) 

    • If you lacked any from last year, they transfer over to this year! 

• All individual (you choose)

  • Look at tutor hour idea document for ideas and HOUR RESTRICTIONS (some are listed below for reference)

    • 2 max for the following types:

      • Sibling tutoring

      • Neighbor tutoring

      • Friend tutoring

      • Athletic tutoring

      • Fine Arts tutoring

    • Extra tutoring hours can go towards volunteering

    • **CANNOT USE TUTORING HOURS FROM SUMMER!**

    • **Big Brothers Big Sisters Program and Boomerang does not count**
