How to use Twitter: Extras
Everything on this page is extra! Read whatever you want to. Be sure to do the completion task at the bottom!
If your child is on Twitter
If your child has a Twitter account, remember that Twitter is a platform for adults, not kids, so they may be exposed to mature content. If your child is using Twitter or any other social media, it helps to keep the lines of communication open, share your expectations and advice, and pay close attention to privacy settings. Check all the settings but pay close attention to these:
- Privacy and safety
- Protect your tweets> Click box to select so only approved users will see the account.
- Location information> Click box to unselect Add location information to my Tweets .
- Photo tagging> Click to select Off.
- Direct messages> Click box to unselect Receive messages from anyone. You don't want strangers to be able to contact your child.
- Discoverability and contacts> Click boxes to unselect Let others find you by your email address and make sure that Let others find you by your phone number is unchecked.
- Display media that may contain sensitive content> Make sure this is unchecked.
- General> Data Usage> Video autoplay
- Click box to select never. The default allows videos to autoplay and it's better to turn this off to avoid seeing inappropriate content.
