In February of 2022, we sent 8 of our most enthusiastic student council members to North High School for the State Convention. We chose who attended by submitting an application for our advisor as well as our administration to pick from.
At the convention, we had the opportunity to make connections with the other schools and strengthen our leadership skills through the experience. This was a great bonding experience for all our council members present. We had a blast thinking up creative ways to fit the themes with our costumes!
It is tradition for us to show up on the first day dressed up as hot dogs. The second day, we fit the “tune” theme by showing up as the Tune Squad. On the last day, we wore our 2021 homecoming shirt, which is a parody of the ACDC logo, as well as other accessories that show our school spirit.
We hosted multiple other schools in a leadership training and idea share. Our council spent many weeks making decorations for our gym to create a full experience for the other councils. Additionally, student council members created presentations of topics we wanted to share. We led discussions and heard from the different presidents of the councils present. It was a great bonding experience between councils from different school districts.
This summer, we sent one of our student council members to the AASC Summer Leadership Experience. She attended the first session and was a part of the D1 council. By attending, she was able to strengthen Red Mountain's relationship with other council students around the state. This is a trait that can be utilized in the school year to follow. Her favorite part of the experience was the friendships made and the bonds created in such a short time. She enjoyed the time spent there, and loved learning how to trust the process.
A past RMHS student council member, Mackenzi Stein, was also a JC at the first session. Sadly, our advisor was unable to attend as a camp counselor because of health issues, but was able to make an appearance on the third day. They all frequently talk about their positive experiences and urge us to take part in it in the summers to follow.
Any leadership conference other than AASC
During April, our entire council attended a spirit conference at Carl Hayden High School along with the Phoenix School District. We all dressed in Space Jam Jerseys to fit the “out of this world” theme and played games put together by their council. We were able to bring the councils together to wish our advisor good luck as she was unable to attend due to cancer surgery. We appreciated the welcoming invitation from Phoenix Union.
In August 2022, our council had the opportunity to go to Campo Verde for an idea share. We were able to meet other councils and learn from each other. We played games that we can utilize in our own councils. They split us up into classrooms to lead small discussions on what we can all do to better our own councils. We ended the night with a dance party, and were grateful for the opportunity we had to attend.
