Standards:
MA19.K.4 - Connect counting to cardinality using a variety of concrete objects.
MA19.K.5 - Count to answer "how many?" questions.
MA19.K.15 - Classify objects into given categories of 10 or fewer; count the number of objects in each category and sort the categories by count.
Objective: Students will be able to graph students names according to the number of letters in their first name.
Directions: Students read the story Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Students first made a class anchor chart with all of their names alphabatized to compare each others' names. Then, students made another class anchor chart with all of their names sorted by how many letters in their first name. After which, students were given a sticky note to write their first name on and place it on the classroom graph showing how many letters were in their name. Students compared the data to see which number of letters had the most, were any equal, which had the least. Lastly, students tried to construct their own "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" tree, and see how many letters their tree could hold before it "bent" like in the story. Students also explored coconuts using their 5 senses, ending with opening one and tasting a fresh coconut!
