ELA21.1.17 - Use content knowledge built during read-alouds of informational and literary texts by participating in content-specific discussions with peers and/or through drawing and writing.
Objective:
Students will know:
content knowledge can be learned from read-alouds of informational and literary texts.
content knowledge can be shared with others through discussions, drawing, or writing.
Students will be able to:
gain new content knowledge by engaging in read-alouds of informational and literary texts.
participate in discussions with their peers demonstrating their knowledge of content-specific topics.
produce drawings or writing that displays content knowledge learned through read-alouds.
Directions:
Students will design and build their own parade balloons using materials like construction paper, cardboard, or paper plates, decorating them with characters or themes, inspired by the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and then present them in a classroom parade, mimicking the iconic New York City event.
Guidelines:
Students read and had discussions about the book, Balloons Over Broadway: The Inspiring True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade by Melissa Sweet. After discussing the plot and reviewing skills such as making and confirming predictions and sequencing, students were challenged to work with a partner or group to create a balloon design to display in a classroom parade at the end of the week. Students had the choice to select a pre-made design or create their own using materials of their choice. Students also responded to the following prompt: If you could design a puppet, what would you imagine it to be? Students drew pictures of their designs and explained why they selected the design.
