As technological advances continue so does the battle to ensure all students have equal access to every different types of technology. Today's school leaders have the difficult task of ensuring that all of their students have access to computers and other personal electronic devices and that this technology is substantial for the education of that student. The biggest hurdle continues to be lack of funding.
Ways in which schools provide equitable access:
- 1 to 1 technology initiatives
- Bring Y our Own Device (BYOD)
- Federal e-rate program
- Professional development activities for teachers
Ideas for teachers to schedule technology usage:
- Post a schedule - and stick to it!
- Draw pop-sickle sticks - write students names on pop-sickle sticks and draw a name. The student chosen is first. When that student's time is up he or she will draw a stick, etc.
- Assign teams and have students work in pairs
- Remind app
- Get Creative!
Computer Labs
Computer Labs
Computer labs are a great way to ensure equal access for technology among students. Effective labs have a few common features:
- Each student has their own personal computer
- A well educated teacher instructing students on computer literacy
- Access to alternate devices such as iPads or 3D printers
Mobile Computer Labs
Mobile Computer Labs
Mobile computers have many different looks but all are designed to bring technology devices to classrooms. Effective mobile labs are equipped with enough devices for every student to have their own device. Mobile labs are also equipped with charging ports designed to easily charge every device.
