Wittstruck e-News! April 3, 2020

Families, as we adjust to our new normal, please email me with any questions, comments or concerns. I know we are all figuring out what online learning looks like. I’ve planned more than you may be able to manage right now. Feel free to take it slow. Try to complete 1 math, 1 reading and 1 extra activity each day. Students will use also Dreambox daily. Some families may not have technology provided by the district before Monday. Do not worry - I will connect with you.

I understand how you must be feeling right now: balancing home schooling your student, working from home or outside of home, keeping kids busy, staying healthy, learning new boundaries/norms…it’s a lot. I am doing the same with my 7-year old. I’ll try to make things manageable. Please keep an open communication with me and we will work through this as a team.

No te preocupes, me conectaré contigo.

MPS Communication

Family emails are important! It’s more important than ever that families make sure they have an email registered with MPS. Email and phone calls are the best way for schools and MPS to get important information to families while school buildings are closed. If you have not been receiving regular updates from your school or the district, please call 612.668.0221 or email SISupdate@mpls.k12.mn.us to submit or update your email.

Please send your student to school with a warm coat, gloves, hat and snow pants. We have 30 minutes of outside recess daily unless decided by the school.

Dear Families,

There’s a wonderful beginning to your child’s school day! It’s called a Morning Meeting and it’s a great way to build community, set a positive tone, increase excitement about learning, and improve academic social skills.

Morning Meeting usually takes between 20-30 minutes. First thing each morning, the children, Ms. Erika (classroom ESP) and I gather in a circle. We begin by greeting each other. Every day, your child hears his or her name spoken by a classmate in a friendly and cheerful manner.

Next, students share interesting news with each other in a structured way. Sometimes we go around in a circle and all students share; other times a few students share and have a conversation with the class. Sharing helps students listen carefully, think about what they hear, formulate good questions, and learn from each other. During sharing, children have a chance to feel that their ideas are valued and that the other children care.

After sharing, there is an activity for the whole class. We might sing or recite a poem or play a math game. The activity time helps the class feel united as a group, reinforces academic skills, and helps the children learn how to cooperate and solve problems.

Finally, we read the morning message chart, which helps students think about the day ahead. Sometimes, I use this time to review a practice a reading, punctuation or math skill.

Every day, Morning Meeting lets children know that is a safe place where all children’s feelings and ideas are important. We’d love to have you visit a Morning Meeting. Just email to arrange a good time. You’ll see for yourself why we’re excited about this to start our day.

Your student’s Teacher,

Ms. Wittstruck

Kindergarteners and After School

Going to school can be exhausting for many kids. The school day can be physically, emotionally and mentally draining. Kindergarteners expend a lot of energy focusing in class, following rules, completing work, learning new routines and navigating new relationships. For many it is their first time away from home for a full day. By the time they get home from school, they are quick to fall apart.
