Spectrogram

What is a spectrogram?  A spectrogram is a way to visualize sound. If the colors appear higher on your screen, they have a higher frequency (higher pitch). If they appear lower on the screen, they have a lower frequency (lower pitch).  The color represents how energy of the wave (loud and quiet).

When looking at a spectrogram, you will see multiple lines because most sounds are made up of a collection of a lot of different sounds that you hear as one!

Sound Waves

This app shows sound waves and how air particles move when sound is produced. When you zoom in, you see the wave frequency changes represented by a red visual wave. When you zoom out, you can see how these frequency changes affect the air particles around the sound.

Remember, the higher the frequency, the higher the sound. You will visually see more “bumps” pass by your screen.

Oscillator

What is an oscillator?

An oscillator is a device that produces oscillating (back and forth) electronic currents. In this case, it is used to create sounds at specific frequencies. The different shape options are the shape of the sound wave that is formed. The shape of a wave will determine the timbre of a sound.
