Race and Identity fulfills the ethnic studies requirement for the state of Minnesota. It invites students to explore who they are, where they come from, and how identity shapes lived experiences in Minnesota and the US. Students examine how race, gender, sexuality, culture, family history and community shape their sense of self, and how identity shifts across contexts. Building on that foundation, we will critically unpack race as a social construct, through examining how laws, policies, and power structures have defined racial categories, upheld racist ideas, and shaped access to rights and resources. We will end with understanding resistance and resilience, highlighting movements and strategies that marginalized communities have used and still use to assert equality and preserve identity. By the end, the goal is that students are equipped with critical tools to analyze identity, understand racial power structures, and envision pathways towards liberation and equity.Â
Let's have a great semester!
