6-12 Program Model

The MPS Multilingual Programming Framework sets expectations for ELD support and service for students depending on grade and WIDA level. Each school is encouraged to consult with the Department to modify these supports to best suit building and student needs. Parents can receive more detailed information about students' ESL supports for academic achievement and English Language Development from their students' ESL teacher. Students are scheduled into classes based on their WIDA proficiency level from their annual ACCESS score.

Support by Level

Focused Language Study by Level:

• Level 1: One or two periods of English per day, can be English Language Development (ELD 1) or English as a Second Language (ESL) 1A/1B. ELD and ESL classes will facilitate growth in English language proficiency (aligned to WIDA standards) and promote literacy development (aligned to ELA standards).

• Level 2: One period of ELD 2 or one period of ESL 2A, a sheltered class taught by a dual-licensed teacher, or a co-taught class with an EL teacher.

• Level 3:

  • ​Student in the country three years or less: One period of ELD 3 or one period of ESL 3A, a sheltered class taught by a dual-licensed teacher, or a co-taught class with an EL teacher.

  • Student in the country four years or more:  One period of a co-taught class with an EL teacher.

• ​Level 4: One period of a co-taught class with an EL teacher.

• Level 5: One period of a co-taught class with an EL teacher
