Programs

There are dozens of local programs that can help you explore your interests, expand your knowledge, and plan for your future. Check out this link for various summer enrichment opportunities

The Columbia Heights Fire Explorers is a program for young people to gain experience and feel out if the Fire/EMS service is right for them.  The program is for 14 – 21 year-olds to try their hands at Firefighting and Emergency Medical skills in a learner-focused environment without the obligation and expense of taking college classes.  The Explorers receive the same training as our Firefighters in order to give them the most realistic and authentic feel for the industry.  The only difference in training is that Explorers cannot enter an immediately dangerous environment (a live fire, swift water, etc.).  The Fire Explorers meet every Tuesday at 6:30pm until approx 9pm.  If you or someone you know would like to try it out, call the Fire Dept at (763) 706-8150 for more information.

They can even gain college credits through Exploring! https://www.northernstar.org/news/enavigator/free-colleges-credits-for-explorers

Summer Reads Mentors work together to fight the summer slide: a decline of literacy skills in children grades K-5 over the summer months. Mentors bring literacy to life through a variety of activities such as tutoring, gardening, movements, arts, storytelling and more! They serve full-time (40 hours/week) in the Twin Cities metro and greater Minnesota, from June 13 – August 5. Mentors must be 18 by the first day of service in order to serve. Priority is given to applications received by April 29, 2022.
