Welcome to 8th grade Science at Olson Middle School! On this website you will find information about this class, as well as important reminders for our 8th grade scholars.
My name is Effie Albitz and I am the 8th grade science teacher here at Olson Middle School. This is my fourth year teaching at Olson and I love it more every year! I studied Chemistry and Spanish at the University of San Diego, and after graduating in 2017, I returned to my home state of Minnesota. I continued my education at St. Mary's University of Minnesota, where I received a Masters of Arts in Teaching Instruction Spring of 2020. When I am not teaching our scholars about Earth and Space Science, you can find me being active outside, baking, reading good books, and spending time with my friends and family.
If you have any questions or concerns feel free to email me and I will get back to you as soon as possible. I am always available from 8-9:30am and from 1:40-3pm, but I will try to accommodate emails when possible throughout instructional periods.
In this course students will explore earth science concepts in three main areas of study: meteorology, geology, and astronomy. To best prepare our students for high school, this class will incorporate frequent reading and writing, project based learning, and lab based inquiries. These experiences will help develop the students’ literacy, technology, and communication skills, which are essential for success in high school and beyond. As scientists, we will develop our skills to conduct and design experiments, make observations, record, organize and analyze data, interpret data tables and graphs, and develop strong scientific explanations. At the end of 8th grade students will have the content knowledge, critical thinking skills, ability to collaborate and effectively problem solve, and the lab experience and safety awareness necessary for the next step in their science studies.
