As per school policy, students in orchestra will earn grades in two categories: performance grades and practice grades.
Performance grades include concerts and playing assessments.
Practice grades include daily rehearsal skills (i.e. following expectations and demonstrating knowledge during rehearsal), exit tickets, and worksheets as they are assigned.
Performance Requirement Expectation
In our orchestra class, each student’s participation is vital to our ensemble’s success, as the class relies on the collaborative efforts of all its members. Therefore, attending performances is an essential part of the course.
If you have any questions about this expectation or need to discuss any potential exceptions, please reach out to your child’s orchestra teacher as soon as possible. You can contact Mrs. Tura at kimberly.tura@moundsviewschools.org or Ms. Elliott at janet.elliott@moundsviewschools.org.
All students are expected to participate in the concerts on the following dates. Please, make note of them in your calendar as soon as possible to avoid potential schedule conflicts.

Concert Attire
Students should wear professional black attire for concerts. This includes black bottoms (black slacks or long skirt or dress) and a nice top that is black. Black shoes are preferred.
If you need assistance in attaining concert attire, please email Mrs. Tura at least one week prior to the performance (kimberly.tura@moundsviewschools.org).
Students will have a playing assessment 2-3 times over the course of a semester. These assessments will be announced at least two weeks prior to the assessment and may include a scale and/or a specified passage of music from the concert pieces. Playing assessments will be used to help determine seating at the upcoming concert and will be included in the Performance Grade for the course.
Students' playing will be assessed using the rubric to the left. Please email Mrs. Tura if you have any questions (kimberly.tura@moundsviewschools.org).
At the beginning of each week, students will start with 10 rehearsal skill points. Mrs. Tura and Ms. Elliott have high expectations for all students to consistently perform at an "A" level, retaining all 10 points by demonstrating productive and effective rehearsal skills throughout the class period. Points may be deducted if a student does not exhibit proficient rehearsal skills.
Proficient rehearsal skills include:
Being prepared for class with all necessary materials (e.g., binder, instrument, pencil).
Actively engaging in the rehearsal and using critical thinking skills by playing, listening, evaluating, and making adjustments.
Showing creativity in style, dynamics, and expression during the rehearsal.
Demonstrating awareness of others by minimizing distractions and collaborating musically with peers.
Asking for in-school lessons when support or extension is needed.
