Dear Sponsor,
First, I would like to thank you for your decision on sponsoring interns (including me), during their time at Mote. It is a big relief on the financial side, and I could enjoy my time at Mote a lot more carefree. I did my mandatory internship (3 months) and my Master Thesis (6 months) for my Master degree at Mote and invested in between those two an additional two months. So I by the time I am going to graduate in December, I spent almost an entire year here.
During my internship time, I had the chance to tag and release snook with Dr. Nathan Brennan, I worked at the Mote facility at the Keys a couple of days to help out at the coral restoration program and I had the time to prepare everything for my Master Thesis.
Currently, I am doing active research in the Phytoplankton department, with Dr. Vince Lovko. Dr. Lovko gave me my own research project on the effects of algicidal bacteria on the Florida Red Tide organism Karenia brevis. This includes mainly, setting up different treatments of the algae with the algicidal bacteria and looking at the results (counting viable algae cells), genetically work, toxin analysis and a lot of other small tasks. I carry out all of my genetically and bacterial work in a biosafety hood. Cell counts are done by eye under the microscope.
After the algae cells are counted, the data from each experiment needs to be processed. Usually, I plot my primary data (cell counts) and my secondary data (mathematically transformed data) and look at statistical values. So far, we could show algicidal activity for bacterial strains, which we received from other scientists. Own bacterial isolates showed no algicidal activity.
I really enjoy this project, as it is very diverse in tasks and challenging. I loved my time at Mote. I met so many great scientists that do amazing work and I learned a lot. I can only recommend this internship to anybody who is seeking laboratory experience, hands on experience and personal growth.
If you have any questions regarding my work or anything else, feel free to contact me:

Water samples are taken on shelf & costal surveys, regularly. We use a rosette sampler, which can be opened and closed via a board computer. So we can take samples from the bottom, middle and surface of our sampling stations. Water samples are checked for nutrition values, Phytoplankton community & K. brevis activity, I screened for algicidal bacteria and many other things.

To scholarship selection members,
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for selecting me for this scholarship. This internship was an invaluable experience for me in ways I never thought imaginable. I previously came to this internship with zero knowledge on marine life or marine biology in general. After completing this internship, I now have the passion and drive to want to continue my education and career towards a path in marine conservation. I met so many amazing interns and staff members along the way whom I have gained great friendships with and hope to remain in contact. This experience has reshaped my life both personally and professionally and I will forever be thankful that you have helped make that possible.
Warmest regards,
Rebecca Lee

Mote Program: Coral Reef Ecological Processes
Dear Mote Scholarship Committee and Donors,
My name is Josh Pi and I am a current intern for the Coral Reef Ecological Processes program at the IC2R3 station. I wanted to send a short thank you to let you know that I am very grateful to be selected as a scholarship recipient. Your generosity will certainly help alleviate some of the expenses during this internship, and help me pursue my passion for ocean science. I am thrilled to call Mote home for the next 3 months and hope that I can soak up as much knowledge during this time to prepare me in the field for the future. If you ever find yourself down in the Keys, I would be more than happy to show you around Mote and talk to you about the projects we're working on. Thank you again.
Best,
Josh Pi
