Open House Information
4th Grade
Welcome to the beginning of another new school year. I am looking forward to working with you and your child. In this letter you will find some classroom procedures. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns as the year progresses.
Things to remember:
Students need notes when they are not going home the usual way such as dentist, birthdays, piano lessons etc. They also need to check in and out at the office if they leave school early, come late, or have appointments during the day. If your child is taking a different bus than usual please let the bus garage know and send a note with them to school.
Birthday treats must be purchased, not homemade.
Snacks for snack time should be nutritious, such as crackers or fruit. The cafeteria does have a healthy snack option as well as milk that you can purchase for your child.

What to Expect!
Reading:
Each night your child will be expected to read for approximately 20 minutes. They are to log this in their reading log that will be in their Take-Home folder. It is our goal that each student reads 40 chapter books by the end of the school year.
Book Bowl: Starting in October, we will be doing monthly Book Bowl competitions. The students will receive a book list and be assigned to a team within our classroom. The team will decide which student will read which books on the list. At the end of the month we will have a class competition with questions from several books on the list. The winning team from each class will compete against the other classes' winning teams. It has been a fun way for the kids to work together to celebrate reading.
IXL Challenge: Starting in October, we will have monthly IXL challenges. Students will be expected to work on the selected IXL math skills, with the goal of completing them each month. Each IXL skill is met when the student reaches a score of 80. We use this as a supplemental learning tool to refine the skills we are working on, as they correlate to what they are working on in math at the time. The classes in fourth grade compete to see which class can finish the most of these challenge sheets. It has been a fun way for the students to work on their math skills.
Math Facts- Math fact fluency is something that we work really hard on in fourth grade. Practicing with flashcards or utilizing an online program is very helpful in mastering the math facts. If students have extra time at night, it would be very beneficial that they practice. This is a skill that helps them not only in fourth grade but is super beneficial as they move to fifth and sixth grade math.
Additional work: It is very rare for students to have additional homework. If students do not complete the work within the extended work time provided at the school, this work will also be sent home to complete.
Chromebooks: Students will receive chromebooks in fourth grade. This tool will be used in the classroom, they will not be allowed to take them home. Parents and students will be required to fill out a chromebook policy form. If students are misusing their chromebook, consequences will be given. We use these as learning tools, if a student's chromebook has been taken away from misuse, they may fall behind or miss out on learning opportunities.
Grading
Reading, math, and language arts are graded with letter grades: A, B, C, D, or an F. Science, social studies, art, P.E., music, as well as conduct areas are graded with an S,N,I, or U.

Bienvenidos al comienzo de otro nuevo año escolar. Tengo muchas ganas de trabajar con usted y su hijo. En esta carta encontrará algunos procedimientos del salón de clases. Comuníquese conmigo si tiene alguna pregunta o inquietud a medida que avanza el año.
Cosas para recordar:
Los estudiantes necesitan notas cuando no se van a casa de la manera habitual, como dentista, cumpleaños, lecciones de piano, etc. También deben registrarse en la oficina si salen temprano de la escuela, llegan tarde o tienen citas durante el día. Si su hijo está tomando un autobús diferente al habitual, informe al garaje del autobús y envíe una nota a la escuela.
Las meriendas de cumpleaños deben comprarse, no hacerse en casa.
Las meriendas para la hora de la merienda deben ser nutritivas, como galletas saladas o frutas. La cafetería tiene una opción de meriendas saludables, así como leche que puede comprar para su hijo.

Cada noche se espera que su hijo lea aproximadamente 20 minutos. Debe registrar esto en su registro de lectura que estará en su carpeta para llevar a casa. Nuestro objetivo es que cada estudiante lea 40 libros de capítulos para el final del año escolar.
Book Bowl: A partir de octubre, realizaremos competencias mensuales de Book Bowl. Los estudiantes recibirán una lista de libros y serán asignados a un equipo dentro de nuestro salón de clases. El equipo decidirá qué estudiante leerá cuáles libros de la lista. Al final del mes tendremos una competencia de clase con preguntas de varios libros en la lista. El equipo ganador de cada clase competirá contra los equipos ganadores de las otras clases. Ha sido una manera divertida para que los niños trabajen juntos para celebrar la lectura.
IXL Challenge: A partir de octubre, tendremos desafíos mensuales de IXL. Se espera que los estudiantes trabajen en las habilidades matemáticas IXL seleccionadas, con el objetivo de completarlas cada mes. Cada habilidad IXL se cumple cuando el estudiante alcanza una puntuación de 80. Usamos esto como una herramienta de aprendizaje complementaria para refinar las habilidades en las que estamos trabajando, ya que se correlacionan con lo que están trabajando en matemáticas en ese momento. Las clases de cuarto grado compiten para ver qué clase puede terminar la mayor cantidad de estas hojas de desafío. Ha sido una forma divertida para que los estudiantes trabajen en sus habilidades matemáticas.
Operaciones matemáticas- La fluidez de operaciones matemáticas es algo en lo que trabajamos muy duro en cuarto grado. Practicar con tarjetas o utilizar un programa en línea es muy útil para dominar las operaciones matemáticas. Si los estudiantes tienen tiempo extra por la noche, sería muy beneficioso que practiquen. Esta es una habilidad que les ayuda no solo en cuarto grado, sino que es muy beneficiosa a medida que pasan a matemáticas de quinto y sexto grado.
Trabajo adicional: Es muy raro que los estudiantes tengan tarea adicional. Si los estudiantes no completan el trabajo dentro del tiempo de trabajo extendido proporcionado en la escuela, este trabajo también se enviará a casa para completarlo.
Chromebooks: Los estudiantes recibirán Chromebooks en cuarto grado. Esta herramienta se utilizará en el salón de clases, no se les permitirá llevárselas a casa. Los padres y los estudiantes deberán completar un formulario de política de Chromebook. Si un estudiante no está usando su Chromebook apropiadamente, recibirá consecuencias. Usamos los Chromebooks como herramienta de aprendizaje. Si un estudiante ha perdido el uso del Chromebook por uso inapropiado, se perderá oportunidades de aprendizaje.
Calificaciónes
Lectura, matemáticas y artes del lenguaje se califican con letras: A, B, C, D o F. Ciencias, estudios sociales, arte, educación física, música y áreas de conducta se califican con una S, N, I , o U.
