Raising awareness about the inhumane conditions on Death Row in the US
BACKGROUND INFO
This is the Final Major Project for my Art Foundation course, which aims to raise awareness about the conditions on US Death Row. Prisoners are still people, and the conditions in which they live on Death Row are beyond inhumane. I intended to create a project which evokes feelings of sympathy in my audience towards those on Death Row. This has proven to be challenging, as the majority of people on Death Row are murderers / serial killers, so people can, understandably, be reluctant to show any empathy towards such criminals. In order to make it less easy for the audience to distance themselves / dehumanise prisoners on Death Row, I have written letters to multiple inmates, asking for their individual stories and daily experiences on Death Row. I hope that, by including these personal accounts of suffering in my work, I can help the audience to connect with the prisoners on a more human level, and encourage them to recognise that, despite their circumstances, criminals are still human beings.
The work currently displayed on this website is the build-up for the final piece, which will be complete this September (2020).
