Week review (18th – 20th, sep, 2019)
During this week, I have been creating models that relate to my given object. The models were things that I could derive from different perspectives of the object and the nature of it. I used materials that I did not before such as plastic straws, wood sticks, glue gun etc. When I ran out of ideas, I tried to think around its nature which was electricity and space. I think the strengths will be the diversity of the materials used and ideas but I made less than ten objects which was the given limit would be the weakness.
I also had experienced first crit which was a new thing to me and I liked the idea of gaining constructive critique from peers as it could give me more ideas and inspiration by looking at others work too.
Week review (25th – 27th, Sep, 2019)
During this week, I have been exploring King’s Cross area looking for various aspects and details relating to the Grids, nets and maps brief.
Throughout the three days, I have been drawing, experimenting with materials and taking photographs of architectural elements for later use.
The process of drawing was very new to me as I just looked for somewhere to sit outside with very limited work space/materials to work with. The good aspect of this method was that I was in a way trying to produce works quickly but I noticed that the working conditions get affected a lot by many factors such as the weather, the surroundings such popularity, noise and it was mostly uncomfortable to stay long for me.
Week review (2nd – 4th, Oct, 2019)
We were introduced to the second part of the Grids, Nets and Maps project where we need to choose one of the briefs to create works based on it. I chose to do the shelter project where I would need to design different shelter designs. I made four designs for each theme: temporary shelter, car port and bus stop in different angles. I looked at Soviet bus stops as they had similar style to my simple shape designs. We also went to a gallery visit to Mayfair area where I got to see interesting works at Gagosian, unexpected art auction and Gallarie Thaddaeus Ropac (James Rosenquist).
Week review (9th – 11th, Oct, 2019)
During this week, I decided to make bus stops based on my initial sketches and idea development page. I started to make models using foamboard, aluminium sheets, clay, wire and Modroc plaster. All these materials were new to me so the outcomes were not how I imagined them to be, I felt the need of improvement in cutting foamboard better with a better scalpel and being able to manipulate wires and Modroc better.
We also had our second crit where my work was presented for the first time. There I was able to gain positive feedbacks as well as improvements which were to have more written development process/progress, mood board for each design and considering about different users of the bus stop.
Week review (16th – 18th, Oct, 2019)
During this week, I was introduced to various medias: videos/films such as ‘Dial H-I-S-T-O-R-Y’ - 1997 by Johan Grimonprez and ‘Frioucci Made me Hardcore’ - 1999 by Mark Leckey, pop music video as a new version of ‘Ever is All’ - 1997 by Pipilotti Rist and text to read such as ‘I don’t like art’ by Graham Crowley.
Some films were striking such as the ‘Dial H-I-S-T-O-R-Y’ and ‘Ever is All’ and the pop music video by Beyoncé was interesting of how she incorporated bits and moments that remind scenes from ‘Ever is All’ appropriately and interesting to watch but maintaining same emphasis on female empowerment.
Week review (30th, Oct, 2019 – 1st, Nov, 2019)
We were introduced to a new project of ‘Protest’ where we were instructed to make individual research on protests happened since 1968 to present day. I chose to research on the protest caused by Grenfell fire because I wanted to focus on the housing issues in this society. I got uncomfortable at the time of presenting my slides to everyone so ended up reading off the slides.
Week review (6th, Nov, 2019 – 8th, Nov, 2019)
This week was the second part of the Protest project where I had to create my own creative work relating to the protest I researched. My initial idea was to create a representation of the Grenfell tower after the fire with a slogan underneath Instead, I made the building without any effect due to lack of resource and I also had feedback that my use of wooden pillars and sticks add to sense of vulnerability to fire. I also chose the slogan ‘£293,368 ≠ 72 Lives’ the money being saved by using cheaper cladding which was the issue of fire spread so quickly and 72 lives lost because of the disaster.
I also added my dry-point print as part of the model signifying the scene of disaster.
Week review (13th, Nov, 2019 – 15th, Nov, 2019)
I was introduced to the 3D pathway project which contained different avenues within such as product and furniture design. During the introduction, I was able to gather ideas for my research to my chosen path, to design a pavilion that brings communities together and a sustainable one.
At the Serpentine gallery visit, I was able to witness some interesting pavilion designs such as wooden park pavilion, cafeteria attached to the main gallery by Zaha Hadid Architects.
Week review (20th, Nov, 2019 – 22nd, Nov, 2019)
During this week, I was developing design ideas for the pavilion 3 dimensionally and also had some peer assessment where I was able to gain advices from peers on what to improve on my overall work progress. Which were mainly to expand use of materials, research and reflection.
Week review (27th, Nov, 2019 – 29th, Nov, 2019)
This week, I was developing my design further to have a finalised design. Within this design, I was partly inspired by Donald Judd’s Marfa and a building in South Korea called ‘Urban Hive Building’. I paid close attention to the overall proportion according to space that the users would feel enough and not too small. I was also considering convenience materials such as heaters, lighting and their sustainable energy sources.
Week review (4th, Dec, 2019 – 6th, Dec, 2019)
This week was an assessment week where all of my works get assessed and I have had valuable comments.
The feedback was mainly to link my work to my research, increase my variety and amount of research to have enough ideas that can feed into my design and to increase experiment stages per projects.
Week review (11th, Dec, 2019 – 13rd, Dec, 2019)
This week involved a presentation of my project to peers in different pathway group as well as thinking about what I should do to wrap up this project during the Christmas holiday. The main comments from the peers were to do more developed design of the actual pavilion, which I have planned of using fine liners and graphical markers to do so. I decided to take the ideas of installing heaters out because I was aware of the funding issue if this project was real and possible vandalism. My weakness was that I could not make any maquettes and have done more site visiting. I think I could achieve this if I had more time and try to proceed works quicker.
Week review (8th, Jan, 2020 – 10th, Jan, 2020)
First week back after the holiday, this week was new project launching day: ‘Psycho-environments’. I worked on my initial research including researching artists from ‘Psycho-buildings’ and visiting my chosen site which is the Natural history museum to gather primary images.
Week review (15th, Jan, 2020 – 17th, Jan, 2020)
During this week, I was developing the initial plan drawings of my new Hintze hall using fine liner and graphic markers. The strengths would be that I am now working in colour and that the drawings clearly convey the viewers of how the space would look from bird’s eye view. The weakness would be that I have not made detail sketches of the space in perspective or in 1st person’s view.
Week review (22nd, Jan, 2020 – 24th, Jan, 2020)
During this week, I was continuing to increase my plan drawings by incorporating different ideas such as merging elements of traditional Korean style pavilion into the space and decorating around it with greeneries like a garden. I thought incorporating my personal background and the coexistence of oriental tradition and western tradition would be a good idea.
Week review (29th, Jan, 2020 – 31st, Jan, 2020)
During this week, I planned to develop some maquettes: the traditional Korean pavilion, the actual space in form of miniature featuring this pavilion. I started to gather the materials I had that I could use to build my pavilion and some interesting materials were chopsticks and paper straws that formed the main pillars and timers on roof. I also coloured it using acrylic and gouache paints to make it look more realistic. The problem was that making of the roof was not simple and consumed long time thinking how I should do this to make the imitation of the unique tile finish and filling the gaps between the timbers. The mistake was also that I have not measured the distance between the pillars exactly so does not look precise overall.
Week review (5th, Feb, 2020 – 7th, Feb, 2020)
During this week, I have made good progress with my investigation of Korean vegetations that I would wish to incorporate in my garden. The page was done straight on A1 sheet and writing in lined paper like notes underneath each flower/tree as brief description of them. I also coloured them in gouache to make it come to life and look more visually engaging. The issue was that I am not experienced with gouache or watercolour, so the quality of paintings was not as expected. I have found solution to fixing the roof of my pavilion model, just needs painting. I now have realisation of the space using collage or drawing, as from my feedback from peers, creating some modern style pavilion derived from its traditional form to do.
Week review (week beginning 23rd, Mar, 2020)
This week, I have been gathering research materials in my document. The gatherings include possible design influences that I thought would be useful from films, music videos and some of my primary sources such as images from trip to S. Korea and IKEA visit. From the online meeting, my feedbacks were that I would need to research more artists and set designers for other sci-fi films. I also created a neon experiment on one of my images from IKEA visit. To create a variety in my research, I have included scans from books that I had of designs attracted me. As I wanted to create a house design that is distinctive from others, I chose to get inspired from fluorescent lightings, incorporate some Korean traditional aspects to parts of my house such as for doors, lightings etc. while maintaining sleekness, modern and simplistic look.
Week review (week beginning 30th, Mar, 2020)
During this week, following my latest feedback, I have done more experimental works on Photoshop using techniques I had to create a basic set design for K music stage, speed experiment with an American car and applying neon lighting experiment on a different image to create abstraction. I also created versions where I altered the Hue to experiment with colour change. I also added more to my initial research with more artists, who uses fluorescent lights and create architectural works. I was able to be inspired from various artists for my ideas such as: creating an image/shape using clear light derived from Matt Copson, ambient/surround lightings using fluorescent lights for interior, exterior derived from Dan Flavin, Alex da Corte, uncluttered/simple interior deco from American Psycho and having a room where the user could witness the sky through a glass pane on ceiling derived from James Turrell.
From the virtual meeting on 2nd, April, I was advised to start making more experiments within the house, on digital and physically with possibly ordering materials online. More journals, articles on homes and aesthetics. Also, think about whether I would need to downsize my project to create myself a more manageable project rather than creating a fully functional house now. I agreed that the timescale seem a little short, so my possible downsizing idea is creating a garage for a private car collection. But I am yet to decide fully.
Week review (week beginning 6th, Apr, 2020)
This week was the first week of Easter holiday, I have searched more articles regarding to beauty vs sublime as I was feedbacked. I was able to realise the definite background meanings for each and realised that I would want to create a ‘beautiful’ design rather than a ‘sublime’ design. I have also visited sites to browse possible materials such as on Cass Art, 4D model shop and London graphic centre but realised I would want to use my own gathered materials as I want the house to be a sustainable one.
I had a try at creating floor plan experiments but I realised that I would need to have clear idea about how the exterior is going to look to determine the floorplan. So, I have added more research in reference to mainly the exterior.
Week review (week beginning 13th, Apr, 2020)
As this is the second week of the holiday, I decided to create my house as I would have for ‘encounters’ project whereby two structures are combined as one, so a part would be traditional Korean style and the other would be a modern style. I have started to draw the exterior of houses that I would want to get inspired from and to manipulate them digitally to create experiments.
Week review (week beginning 20th, Apr, 2020)
This week, I was able to finish the two drawings of a traditional Korean house in different style, one using graphic markers and the other using pen. I was then able to manipulate both the modern house drawing that I have done previously together with the new drawing as a mock up of my finished design. I think it was effective experiment that I was able to realise more clearly as to how my idea of merging the two conflicting houses together looked if it were to be created however, the merging point was very definite and the overall composition seemed awkward due to difference in angle and geometry.
I also applied the neon lighting style on the exterior of the modern side of the property to see how the lighting would work in reality.
Week review (week beginning 27th, Apr, 2020)
During this week, I begun to sketch out initial designs for the façade, two rooms of my choice. For the façade designs, I have tried to create a less definite split which was not easy as I could not simply merge them fluidly but I was able to try to make the overall look less awkward by using curvature to minimise the sudden sense of merging. The two spaces I chose to create were the underground garage and the kitchen.
For the kitchen designs, I tried to imagine where the kitchen would be placed whether in the modern side or the traditional side of the property and I tried to create different designs for the two cases, modern style kitchen and a kitchen that possesses elements of traditionality within it. I have tried to be as precise as I can be to bring my designs into realisation and have used graphic markers to help me visualise the colour schemes. The weakness would be that I would need to spend much longer time for each design so reduces productivity. The strengths I think was that they were effective in allowing the viewer to visualise the designs for each space and the façade design without difficulty.
Week review (week beginning 4th, May, 2020)
My feedbacks from the last tutorial were to increase productivity and designs for each space. I started off this week by blending the traditional style kitchen into the modern one as I thought it might also be an idea to have traditionality in a kitchen with aspects of modernity as the house itself will be a merge of the two.
The experiment was not perfect but it gave a good grasp of how the blend would be implemented in reality. I again tried the neon effects but in a different manner this time as I tried to highlight the possible existence of electrical wiring and piping which would be hidden normally as another experiment.
Then, I created more designs for the garage and the façade. The extra garage designs consist the ground level of the garage which could be a storage form that is also an entrance to the underground garage. Just like a lift motion. The extra façade designs consist different manipulation of the walkway, manipulation of the exterior design of the modern side of the property. I tried to give those more futuristic/modern look to the ones previously and also to minimise the awkward merge of the two characters. Following my guidance, I abandoned my detail graphic marker style drawing and implemented rough sketching to save time and just to communicate the silhouette of the overall design.
Week review (week beginning 11th, May, 2020)
During this week, I followed my advice in creating further wiring, pipe line experiment experiment that shows the implementation of them in reality. I have produced two experiments consisting a living room design and in a kitchen under the sink. For the living room, I followed the electrical wiring that would be present between lighting, electricals and switches. I gave colour variations for each line. This way, user would not need to suffer from tangled electrical lines or trying to figure out where the line came from.
For the kitchen one, I got this idea from lighting up the darkness under the sink as when trying to find something or trying to fix the system, I thought it would be nice in not needing any extra light source in these cases as it would be a lot more convenient. So, I gave the lighting around the piping that glows in the darkness. I think they were effective in visualising how my lighting ideas would help users in their daily lives.
Week review (week beginning 18th, May, 2020)
As my feedback was to expand my work to 3D, I decided to make 3D maquettes that represent my two spaces. I have made a plan for the underground car park that can hold 9 cars in graphical markers. I also made a start in planning the kitchen model by deciding how I should make this. At the end, I decided that I am going to make mini paper sculptures of elements I am going to include in the kitchen such as storage, fridge, island styled dining table with an induction and sink. I also intend to colour them in graphic markers as I feel that they are the easiest and most effective way to communicate my colour scheme.
I then made the overall space for the kitchen by making two walls and sketching places where the furniture would sit. I then started to create furniture one by one. I had to create an origami template including where I should apply the glue and colouring them before I fold them up. I found difficulty in trying to stick them together as I have not planned the gluing places properly so some sides had large gap.
Week review (week beginning 25th, May, 2020)
I used this week to wrap up my kitchen model by finishing illustrating the floor, cutting out the window and applying plastic plate there, all the wall features and applying traditionality to my mini furniture. I also took pictures to show the model well in different perspectives and lighting effects.
I think the model effectively gives the physical sense of my proposed kitchen design but I think some of the furniture finish could have been better if I cut/planned them precisely.
I have started to make the background for the underground garage but I have changed the design slightly to contain 8 cars as I wanted to place the pillar at the middle of the curvature.
