DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Draping on the stand - my responses to my sketchbook - large sleeves, growths and asymmetry are all themes I wanted to explore when doing stand work. I moved each piece onto different areas the body and capturing it to see where I most liked them. From this, I began creating small collages to develop imagery and concepts.

I decided to create these small collages to help me envision my stand work in a new way and to help me create new conceptual ideas. These really helped me to understand where i wanted to distort the body with oversized areas and where i wouldn't want them to be. This was my first stage of development.

By drawing shapes out from the imagery in my sketchbook, this created new shapes and colours that i felt were interesting to explore. This page inspired me to look into colours that supposedly clash such as purple and yellow, red and pink, green and orange etc.

Inspired by circus freaks - pleats.

The idea to look into circus freaks came from the elephant man and watching the movie in which i learnt Joseph was used as a freak for money. I decided to look further into circus freaks and found interesting imagery. This girl in particular influenced me as she was quite large and i liked her dress and how the pleating sat on her body.

Further Development

Making a victorian style bustle

Using calico and stuffing, i made a bustle to use as stand work to get ideas when making areas of the body larger. Many cultures and traditions have used underlying garments that expand certain parts of the body. I wanted to use this as inspiration for my design development and it was successful when deciding how i wanted my final line up to look.On the left of this page, shows a victorian crinoline and a Korean Shaman 1930's traditional garment both of which accentuate the waist/bottom half of the body.
