Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is there a Cost to get into the contest? There is a suggested donation of $5. In addition, we will have programs available for $1 at the door.
2. Are videotaping and/or photography allowed? NO. No videotaping or photography of any kind is allowed in the performance rooms. You can take pictures in the gym or hallways.
3. May a school logo or anything with our school name on it be worn? Please refrain from all apparel that informs the judge of what school the participants are from.
4. Are students permitted to leave after they are finished performing? It is up to each individual school and their head coach. Please contact your school's speech coach.
5. What are the qualification of the judges? ALL IHSSA judges hae gone through training and certification. Please accept your student's ratings with pride and dignity. Adhere to proper sportsmanship at all times. If you have concerns, talk to your school's coach.
6. How are ratings given? The judge will critique the performance and give a rating of a 1, 2, 3 or Disqualification 4 rating. They will also be giving oral comments to the performers after the performance. We ask that all audience members please remain seated until the judge's comments are done. They only event not giving oral comments is One Act Plays. If the performance receives a 1 rating they will advance on to State contest.
7. If I don't know where/when my student performs what should I do? Contact your head speech coach BEFORE contest. They will know your students time and location of performance(s). Please do not rely on the head office, as the contest managers are extremely busy.
8. Can anyone come to contest? YES! All are invited. There is a $5 donation that is asked of all audience members at the main door. Programs for all centers are available for $1.
9. May I watch anyone perform? Yes! And you are encouraged to watch students from other schools as well as other categories. We have some great performers and they would ALL love the support.
10 What if I have a question about a rating? All question concerning ratings should be taken to your school's head coach. Only the head coach should inquire with the Contest Manager. A coach/audience member/student shoule NEVER inquire with a judge. If you do have a question, please see your coach.
11. May I enter a center once the door has closed? NO. Please do not disrupt any performance when the door has closed. Your entrance could detract from the performance. Please be kind and respectful to our doorkeepers. They are there to support the student performers.
12. Will there be a health care worker available? Yes! If you need medical assistance, please look for the nurse's office by the Improv Room. It will have a red cross on the door.
