5th Grade Social Studies Syllabus

This syllabus is designed to be a general guide for our Social Studies classes. Please note that the components and pacing may change at any time based on the needs of our students; and as we begin implementing the new Kentucky Social Studies Standards into our curriculum.

Fifth Grade Social Studies Curriculum

Unit 1- Geography (August)

Unit 2 – Economics (September)

Unit 3 – Native Americans (October)

Unit 4- Exploration of the New World, Colonization, Comparing Colonies, Colonial Williamsburg, Slavery (November - December)

Unit 5- Growing Tensions (Causes of the Revolutionary War) (December - January)

Unit 6- Preamble, Constitution (Branches of Government), Bill of Rights, Levels of Government (February)

Unit 7-Westward Expansion, Causes of the Civil War and Civil War (March)

Unit 8 – Industrialization, Modern Era (World Wars, Cold War), Civil Rights (April)

Unit 9 – National Holidays and Review (May)

All units were developed based on fifth grade Social Studies Program of Studies for Kentucky, v. 4.1
