Montessori Educators of Alabama (MEA) is a collaborative, generative, and unified community that champions Montessori education in Alabama.
The first known Montessori school in Alabama was established in Birmingham in the 1960s. This pioneering institution laid the foundation for the growth of Montessori education in the state. Today, Alabama boasts a diverse array of Montessori schools spanning from Huntsville to Dothan and Auburn to Tuscaloosa. The continued expansion of Montessori education in Alabama underscores the lasting influence of the state's early adopters and the ongoing commitment to child-centered learning.
The Montessori Educators of Alabama was born from this beginning seed and was revived in 2023 through the hard work and dedication of Lauren Williams and Becky Spooner. Since its reestablishment, MEA has hosted social gatherings, community connections and outreach, and provided professional development opportunities.
