Common Issues
The default student's email or username is generated as follows:
Last letter of the last name
Last 3 letters of the first name
Last 4 digits of the Student ID.
Example:
John Smith, Student ID 123456 → hohn3456@montebello.k12.ca.us
Jane Doe, Student ID 456789 → eane6789@montebello.k12.ca.us
The default password is the last name, first 5 letters. For shorter last names, add x to have 5 characters.
Example:
chan → chanx
hernandez → herna
(Happy Numbers, Zearn, myON, Benchmark, Eureka, Minecraft EDU, McGraw-Hill, Twig, etc.)
The student's access to these platforms is dependent on the student being synced up to the teacher's class roster on Powerschool. Please direct your issue to the appropriate administrator.
Neither Technician nor Librarian has the authorization to make changes to teacher's rosters.
Sometimes you need to log out of your account completely and then log back in.
Click on the Time in your taskbar (usually in the lower right corner).
Click Sign Out.
Type your password to log back in.
If this doesn't work, then you need to remove your account from your computer, then add it back in.
After signing out, on the sign-in screen, click on the arrow next to your name.
Click Remove Account
Type in your username and password to sign back in.
The student may not have logged into these websites for a while (winter break, summer break, etc.)
Click on the menu ⋮ on the browser and click Clear browsing data (This may be hidden under the More Tools Menu). Alternatively, press Ctrl+Shift+Backspace
A window should open. At the top, choose a time range. To delete everything, select All time.
Check the relevant boxes (Cookies and other site data, Cached images and files, etc.)
Click Clear data.
Click on the menu ⋮ on the browser and go to Settings. Alternatively, type chrome://settings into the address bar.
Search or locate Reset Settings. Click Restore settings to their original defaults, and then the blue Reset Settings button.
This should reset everything, including notifications and permissions.
Press the refresh button (circular arrow ↻ on the top row of keys) and the power button on the left side of the Chromebook simultaneously.
Examine the charger for damages. This can include:
Broken USB-C tip or teeth marks on USB-C tip.
Exposed wires
Test the charger on both USB-C ports as well as on another device.
Our Chromebooks can last up to 6 hours depending on how actively it is used or how often you let the battery drain to 0%.
Keep your Chromebook charged at home.
Make sure the yellow/amber light is on. A white light means it's fully charged.
Try both USB-C ports on either side of the Chromebook.
In school, limit your Chromebook use to school-related activities such as:
Learning
Reading
Homework
Testing
(Hardware issues, including Camera, mouse, keyboard, etc.)
Test the affected hardware:
Camera: Open the Camera app
Microphone: Go to mictest.com
Keyboard and mouse: Check for physical abnormality
Touchscreen: Remove the protective case to check for physical abnormality.
Press the refresh button (circular arrow ↻ on the top row of keys) and the power button on the left side of the Chromebook simultaneously.
Some sites can be blocked by:
The District or the school's network
The teacher via a classroom management system.
Test the website on another computer, account, and/or network to determine what the cause could be.
Also, check for spelling errors.
(Unwanted notifications or popups)
You may have installed an extension that has malware in it, OR you gave an extension or website permission to send notifications or pop-ups.
Here's how to remove the extension.
Click on the menu ⋮ on the browser and go to More Tools>Extensions… Alternatively, type chrome://extensions/ on the address bar.
Check for anything that is not school-related, like mouse cursors, backgrounds, gaming extensions, etc. Per the District's signed contract, our Chromebooks are for educational use only. Any extensions not expressly meant for school should be removed.

(Magnifier box taking up screen, robot voice is reading everything I do aloud, the on-screen keyboard is stuck on the screen, the screen is upside down, etc.)
You may have turned on an accessibility feature that has caused your computer to act weirdly.
If you're able to, locate Accessibility in the taskbar (where the Time is). Otherwise, try Alt + Shift + S.
Uncheck as many of the settings as you can until the computer restores itself to a usable state.
Your screen is displaying sideways or upside down.
Try Ctrl + Shift + ↻ to change the screen orientation. Repeat until the orientation is correct.
You may have changed your keyboard's language.
By default, the keyboard should be set to English and the letters US would be displayed next to the WiFi symbol, located next to the time.
If it shows something else, like CO or DV, use the shortcut Ctrl + Space to switch it to the last used language (should be US). Otherwise, you can use Ctrl+ Shift + Space until US is selected.
