Objective

One way to gain insight into a poem’s meaning is by reading a scholarly analysis.

By reading this literary analysis essay, students will gain a deeper understanding of how to interpret the meaning behind the poet’s words in “My Grandmother Washes Her Feet in the Sink of the Bathroom at Sears.”

Assignment

Interview: Getting to Know the “Hyphenated”

The author explains that the granddaughter has the unique ability to bridge the two cultures since she is in-between cultures. The granddaughter also has deep insight into two distinct cultures and can see the similarities.

Students will interview someone who is from two cultures to understand how they are bridging the two cultures.

Students should complete the following tasks for this assignment

  • Choose a person they know who is a “hyphenated” person, someone from two different cultures.

  • Generate 5–7 questions to ask this person about their cultures and what they understand to be similar and what is different. The questions should have them explaining insight into the cultures and how they are bridging the two.

  • Interview the person.

  • Compile the information and share with classmates on FlipGrid.

To reflect, students should answer the following questions on a Google Doc and turn it into Google Classroom to the assignment titled "Lesson 1.8 Interview Reflection"

  • What was the most surprising information learned?

  • What special insight and abilities do mixed-culture people have?
