Welcome to the the IAPC Summer Course. In this workshop we will focus on the practice of facilitating a community of inquiry, delve into theoretical dimensions of philosophy for children, and familiarize ourselves with the IAPC Philosophy for Children (P4C) curriculum. The dress code for this workshop is very casual. Be comfortable! We will be sitting a lot. Each participant will be assigned at least one workshop session to lead. This IAPC Summer Course can be taken for three credits of graduate credit through Montclair State University. If you are interested in this option, please contact Maughn Gregory at gregorym@montclair.edu.
In addition to practical information, the links to the left will also guide you to the readings and/or presentations for each of the theoretical sessions. We ask that you read these articles critically and prepare discussion questions for each reading. Every workshop participant is expected to attend every session, unless otherwise arranged.
This website also contains some rules and information regarding St. Marguerite’s Retreat House. Some of these rules are city ordinances and some have been set by the Sisters of the Episcopal Convent of St. John the Baptist. Please take some time to familiarize yourself with this information, and be respectful of the Sisters’ wishes.
Each participant will receive a certificate of participation at the conclusion of the session. If you also need a letter of confirmation and/or evaluation, please notify Ariel Sykes (organizer). If you would like to talk about establishing new P4C centers, about teacher education, or any such matters, please talk to any of the IAPC faculty while onsite.
You are invited to contribute photographs to the IAPC website. If you do NOT want a photograph of you taken and/or included on the web site, you must let that be known.
From time to time there may be people visiting our seminar for a few hours or a few days, e.g. students, MSU faculty, visiting scholars, and local P4C folks. Visitors are generally welcome but must obtain permission from IAPC staff and must pay for their accommodations. All visitors must be pre-approved by the IAPC, please notify Ariel Sykes (organizer) if you anticipate having someone come for any length of stay while you are at the retreat house. 845-670-3049 (cell) or sykesa@montclair.edu (email)
