Many students have a hard week at school, full of lots of tests, quizzes, and classwork. Many want a break. Should one day a week be dedicated to having fun? Let's do a breakdown, followed by a debate.
Yes,Students will be happier. During the week, students are tired and bored, and a fun Friday would help students with boredom and would let them have a break. Unlike a day off, this day would count as school and could be educational.
No, Students will have a lot less learning time. With one day left out of the week for fun, students will get a lot less time for learning. Since this day will count as a school day, students will struggle more, and students already struggling will continue to fall behind. For students in High School courses, such as algebra or geometry, they will have less time for already fast paced classes.
DEBATE TIME!
In response to the no, Students that are struggling could have one on one teacher time while the teacher does a Blooket or puts on a movie. Students in a high school course would not have fun Friday during the period they have that class. In regard to it counting as a school day with no learning, students would play educational games, or watch a movie related to the class.
In response to the yes, Students will eventually get bored of fun Friday over time, and would just rather have the day off. It would be nearly impossible for teachers to do one on one time with struggling students, as they would have to balance the class, set up games, and deal with sad kids that they are left out. Also, there could be more than one struggling student in a class.
In conclusion, fun Fridays should perhaps not happen, because of struggling students, the demands of high school courses, and all the teachers that would have to multitask and end up with less time to teach the required curriculum.

Many students and teachers are tired on Mondays because of the short weekend. Some people have proposed a four day week. But, to also preserve a 182 day school year there may not be as many breaks and school would go farther into the Summer months.
I think we should not have four day weeks because then Summer break would be shorter and April break would be shorter, or there wouldn’t be one at all to maintain the 182 days.
Would you like a four day week, and what day? If they had a four day week I would want it to be Wednesday so you can have a break in the middle of the week. If Jockey Hollow does the four day week then they should do it on Wednesday because there will be two days of school, one day off another two days of school and then two days off.
Do you think they should have a four day week?

Article 3 of the 2030 series
By Lorenzo Lucas
We all wonder… What will the future look like? This article focuses on toys and games. This includes game consoles, board games, physical toys, and computers.
XBOX will make a new console called the XBOX 720. It will feature 8K graphics. Sony will release the PS6 with 6.5K graphics. The best console will be the Nintendo Vision. It will have 7K graphics, but will feature games like Legend of Zelda Sounds of Jungle, Super Mario Polar Explorers, and Mario Kart Speed Racers! The final console will be SEGA Genie, with 8K graphics, and Sonic Missions. Sega does what Nintendon't.
Monopoly will make a new game exploring the history of its game of real estate finance, featuring the great differences in the economy of 2030 and the past . The Game of Life will update to reflect life in 2030. The best will be a brand new game called “Pick your Path”, and you pick what way to go, with obstacles along the way.
Lego will feature new sets that feature more advanced pieces. The paper instructions will be gone.
Toys will change a lot, in unpredictable ways. Do you agree with my vision of the future? Remember, this is just a prediction, and is not guaranteed to happen.
Article two of the 2030 series
By Lorenzo Lucas
We all wonder… What will the future look like? The house is one of the biggest parts of life, it is where we live, cook, and sleep. With this information in mind, the house will need a comfortable place for all of the above, plus modern conveniences. Let's ponder the look and design of the standard 2030 domicile.
PART 1 - THE BEDROOM The bedroom is the room that we sleep in. We should start with the bed. It will be kept in the corner of the room, with a bedside table on one side. A window with a pipe for rainwater will be next to the bed. Draws and shelves will surround the room, and a desk with a mirror will be against the wall opposite of the bed. This mirror will not be your ordinary mirror though, as it has built in screens that you interact with through hand motions for types of requests and information.
PART 2 - THE BATHROOM The place where… you know. In the future, the bathroom will have the same purpose, to get clean. The sink will dispense water like a waterfall, feeling nice on your hands. The toilet will track your health and will also be heated! The shower will have a rainfall showerhead, that changes colors, and plays music!
PART 3 - THE KITCHEN In the kitchen, you cook. The future of the kitchen will be drastically different than the one today. The kitchen will feature robots hanging on the walls to help you. A mini garden will come out of the wall, with fresh fruits, herbs and vegetables. The oven will be in the wall, and be separated from the stove. The best part will be the sink, with a double basin, and a sink head with multiple options, you can clean better than ever! Also, the standard sponge will be replaced with scrub daddy! You can buy them today, and find them at online.
PART 4 - THE LIVING ROOM The living room will have all new electronics. With curved TVs being the mainstream, the couch will now be curved too. The best part of the new living room will be the XBOX 720, with 10K graphics compared to the current 4K.
Are you excited for the future? This house is just a guess, not an actual house that I traveled to the future to see. Stay tuned for part three of the 2030 series!

Article 1 of the “What if…?” series
By Lorenzo Lucas
For decades, people have been thinking about cars that could fly. In the movie Back to the Future Part II, flying cars abound in their 2015 timeline. Not to mention the vision of the future the great family cartoon The Jetsons, presented. But here we are in 2023, and there are no flying cars to be seen.
If flying cars were a thing, transportation would be altered in such a way that airports would be useless. Since you would have your own personal car that can fly, why would you take an airplane? Highways would most likely be changed from highways to runways, with areas for landing. The highways would be in the sky, and would be able to go over more diverse terrain.
So, if you had a flying car, where would you go? If you want, on a separate piece of paper, write all the places you want to see one day. Stay tuned, for another article of “What if…?”!

You rush into school on Monday with a bag full of Valentine’s Day cards.
Today is Valentine’s Day, and everyone is celebrating it. Everyone is dressed in red and pink, and there are snacks and cards to trade.
A lot of people do not like celebrating Valentine’s Day because it can be a distraction to students, and kids might get out of control. There has been a debate about whether or not we should celebrate Valentine’s Day in elementary, middle, and high schools.
A lot of people, including some teachers, say that some students may not receive a card, which makes it an issue for the fairness of what is supposed to be a celebration.
Also, the candy and food might impact life-threatening food allergies to nuts or other allergens. Some teachers, including ones at Fawn Hollow Elementary in Monroe, have banned candy or food items in Valentine’s Day cards.(Still, pencils, stickers, or other non-food items are allowed.)
But other people say we should celebrate Valentine’s Day. Parents and teachers say that having a party is a welcome balance to the rigor of the academic work throughout the school day.
And, on a larger level some cultures and religions do not recognize the holiday because it does not conform to their beliefs and customs.
But the question remains, should we celebrate Valentine’s Day in school?
YES:
Teachers say that having a party can balance the overall academic school day
Kids like school-wide celebrations
Passing out cards won’t offend teachers and parents
NO:
Distracting to students
Not everybody celebrates it
Kids get carried away (i.e. trying to kiss someone)
Kids get left out
Students with food allergies get left out because of food served
More for younger students, less for older kids in high school and middle school
Can offend certain groups of staff and students
Debate it!

Every Friday during the beginning of PAWS, you get to sign up for sessions for the next week. This article is for those people who do not know what to do if they cannot find anything they like, or find their favorite things filled. To start this list off we recommend choosing your enrichment days first. Enrichments always fill up quicker than coursework. Building on to this, if you want to get into the cooking class, sign up for that right away, because that fills up instantly.
Next, try something new. A lot of the teachers are having new PAWS sessions, so try one of those. Another thing you can try is that when in doubt on your enrichments, just choose reading. Since most kids are supposed to read for homework, just do it for PAWS. Finally, 6th graders, don't be afraid to sign up for a PAWS with a 7th or 8th grade teacher. 7th and 8th grade teachers are not scary. It is also nice to see what classrooms you might someday be in, and meet teachers you might have for the next school year. So, those are our recommendations for what to do if you sometimes find signing up for PAWS a struggle. Happy choosing!

Imagine this: You wake up to see frost on the windows and snowy winds. Racing down to the kitchen, you know one thing: school is canceled. As you pull on your coat to go sledding with your sister, your dad yells, “School’s on!”
But do you still have school?
Now, instead of canceling school, many districts have decided to move to remote learning during a time when school is closed for bad weather: whether it’s a snowstorm, heat wave, heavy rains, or thunderstorms. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, most American kids have had some experience with remote learning . So, should we totally cancel school just for snow days or could we learn from home? What do you think? Think about it!
YES! We Should Get A Snow Day!
The school year is busy and stressful for some school kids. Having a snow day gives kids a day to recharge, get an extra hour of sleep, and notlogging into their computer too early. Also, snow days allow kids to get a break from schoolwork. But, having too many snow days might lead to a makeup day or days at the end of the school year. Even though many people think we shouldn’t have snow days, we should because it gives us an extra day to chill and relax.
NO! We Should Not Get A Snow Day!
Learning should not stop when school is closed for one day. Because of school closures during the pandemic, students should be used to getting work done online. Having school totally canceled could lead to a longer work year. Even though most people think we should get snow days, we shouldn’t because learning should not stop, even on snow days.

The year 2030 is coming in seven years, so I thought it would be fun to predict what school would be like. Examples of changes in schools over the last 10 years include replacing blackboards with chalk boards and libraries transforming to multipurpose media rooms in most schools across the country. More day to day changes included all the COVID - 19 pandemic procedures, from introducing remote learning, and essays being written on the computers instead handwritten, to virtual classrooms and Zoom meetings.
What if the first change was shortening the school day, changing the time from 8:15 - 2:50 to 9:00 - 2:10? That change would mean shortening or removing classes. The next change would be removing whiteboards. Instead of a whiteboard, there would most likely be a big smart board that can be written on. Classes would look very different. Instead of taking tests, you would show what you know by participating in class, and writing about what you know, instead of answering questions chosen by the teacher. Tests can make some kids stressed, and worrying about their grade can put them under a lot of pressure.
What if homework no longer was given to everybody, and used only for punishments- as originally intended when homework was first created. Air conditioners and heaters would be in every classroom, so everybody can be comfortable at all times, and personal fans would be allowed. Food in the cafeteria will be prepared behind a wall, with food rotating on conveyor belts. What if there were vending machines in the hallways, next to the water fountain, serving only water.
These are just my predictions on what school may look like in the year 2030. None of these predictions may even become a reality, so don't get your hopes up. What do you think school could look like in 2030?

New Year resolutions might seem silly to some, but there are many positive benefits. Goal setting offers time of reflection, time where you can think of parts of your life you maybe want to improve. The end of the year is a busy time, so pick a resolution you want to accomplish next year, and maybe spend a few minutes before bed where you think of ways to achieve your goal.
You might think you have to set a big goal, but you don’t. You can set one as small as going to bed earlier. Just pick a goal that is achievable and that you are passionate about. Because if you really aren’t passionate about your goal, you're not going to make much of an effort to achieve it.
Something that a lot of people struggle with is choosing a goal. So here are some ideas.
Focus on getting school work
Read more
Get better at a sport
Find a new hobby
Join a club
Be more involved or outgoing
Exercise
Learn to cook
There are so many more resolutions or goals you can set. And if you can’t think
of one, ask your friends or family members. They know you more than you think.
Just follow three simple steps, set, work towards, achieve.
We picked a student, Lauren Crowe, to learn more about resolutions that apply more to the younger demographic. One of Lauren’s goals for this year is to be more organized. She says that she often takes something out of its place and forgets to put it back. I am sure that many students do the same thing not just at home in their room, but also their locker. I know that keeping your locker clean and organized can be difficult, but it’s important to know where all your stuff is so that it's easy to grab your things before class.
Another goal that Lauren wants to accomplish in the new year is to put her work first. Lauren says, “ It is so easy to get glued to your electronics and forget about some important priorities, that is why I think that this is a good thing to work on this year.”
Laurens final new year's resolution is something that I am sure a lot of other students should consider having as well. Do not worry too much about grades. “I know it is hard not to obsess and worry over grades, but as long as you are doing your absolute best, that's enough.”
Try and think about these goals that Lauren has set, and think if they could be
applied to you.
Have you ever had a point in your life where you wanted to write a paper on something, then you’re thinking, “I know! I’m going to write about duh… yuh… umm… hmm… yabadabadaba… uhhhhhhhh…?”
Well, I think you’ve had Writer’s Block.
Not many know that there is a name for the case of having trouble getting into the flow of writing, or, more simply, running out of ideas.
Every writer has at some point in their life gotten Writer’s Block, but everyone feels it differently. For example, one person might feel Writer’s Block as a brick wall collapsing inside their head, while another might feel it as switching on a light switch, but there is no sign of light in the room.
Every writer also faces obstacles along the way in their writing careers like struggling to get their books published, but they also face internal obstacles. All internal obstacles in writing are Writer’s Block.
I, the writer of this article, get Writer’s Block all the time. In fact, I had trouble coming up with things to write with for a long time until… uhh… well, it’s kind of like… uhh… you see… uhh… well… umm… I think it’s about… uhh…

In this article I will be teaching you about the History of St. Patrick’s Day. This holiday is very special to me because I am about 57% Irish. My Dad was born in Ireland and his entire family is 100% Irish. Anyway, this article is about the History of St. Patrick’s Day, not the history of my family.
St. Patrick’s Day happens every year on March 17th. St. Patrick’s Day is named after, none other than, St. Patrick. He is the Patron Saint of Ireland. He was born in Roman Britain in the late 4th Century. He was kidnapped at the age of 16 and was brought to Ireland as a slave. He escaped but later returned to Ireland in about 432 AD. He then converted the Irish people to Christianity (a type of Religion). St. Patrick used the Shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. In the Christian religion, the Holy Trinity is the Father (God), the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit. When he died on March 17, 461 AD, he had established Churches, Schools and Monasteries in Ireland. Now, you may be asking, “I thought he chased the snakes out of Ireland!”. No, he didn’t. That is a legend. Did St. Patrick chase the snakes out of Ireland? No. Are there any snakes in Ireland? No.
That is the short History of St. Patrick’s Day! I hope you enjoyed this article and I hope you have a great St. Patrick’s Day!

Hello Jockey Hollow Main Campus and STEM! Newspaper Club is back with another random roar. Previously on Random Roars we wrote an article about Christmas facts you might’ve not known. We’re telling you this next random roar may become the next viral sensation on the internet- maybe even at STEM and Main Campus.
Here’s our story: It was just another day of trying to come up with an original idea for another article. We’d gone weeks of doing this, when suddenly, we had it. We had one of our most incidental, arbitrary, aimless, irregular (and did I mention random?) idea in a while! There are 26 letters in the English alphabet, right? Well, guess what? You get to pick what the best one is!
We made a Google Form with, of course, all 26 letters of the alphabet. You all can access this form below to register your favorite, and results will come in. Here is the link:

“Where is it?”
“ I have no idea.”
“The wind must have taken it” said Luna
It was a windy day where the wind was fierce and wanted to ruin everything. It wanted to ruin the town, the world, the universe. Terrorising buildings, kicking down trash cans, swarming around electricity poles and continuing doing so until they snap. Leaving all of it mess behind making other people clean up after it. Going to other towns and spreading its horror, until it runs out of steam. Just to pass by again as light as a feather.
“When are we going to evacuate?” said Aubry confusingly
“Ya when?” said Leo adding on to Aubry.
“No one knows” said Luna
“ I think we're stuck” said John handing them hot chocolate
John was married to Luna and had two children Aubrey and Leo.
“Lets calm down and see what's on the radio” John said trying to relax the freaked out family.
As they turn on the radio. static big blobs of words, muffled up a thousand times. lost calling out but making no sense. Trying to say something to you maybe a warning maybe a sign of relief but we will never know. A lost soul a lost message. That's what the Collins family saw.
“ Hey I have a better idea than trying to get this old thing to work! Board games!” said Luna
Thump thump thump thump. Was it someone or the wind picking its next victim? Aubrey and Leo looked out the window a package no truck no person just a package. With two soul filled with happiness they shouted at the same time
“A PACKAGE!!!”
Luna and John shocked and worried but had the courage to open the door and pick up the package.
“Well here it is” said Luna
“I will get the box cutter!” said John
The suspense felt like a million years. This package could change everything or nothing. This package could fill them with happiness with hope with joy! Or it could make them feel the worst they ever felt before and all the hope will wash away, and then soon they will be left with a empty heart.
“Ok here goes nothing” said Luna
Nothing everything nothing everything keep going through there head with the one last hope
John pulled open the box
Silence
It was a letter in a box. So Luna read it. The letter said
Please Read To Hole Family Of 4
There's a box in the wall right next to the stove. Hidden. Find it, I can see you need it most at this moment
Everyone shocked why would there be a box in the wall?? Why not is the real question.
John took a work hammer and hit the wall. The world stopped smashing their own house for a letter it could be fake or real or nothing. bang bang bang hitting the wall again again and again. John took out the box grabbed it opened it and it was nothing. john flipped over the box wait for something anything to help this family in need“ tink” a necklace fell on the ground.
They looked at it and they saw people holding hands together on the gem
John looked back in the broken wall they found a note
Together Forever no matter what happens
Those two things change them forever.

Halloween is here and you know what that means… scares, costumes, pumpkins, and most of all candy, lots and LOTS of candy, but what are the most popular candies that people like to get in their trick or treat baskets?
In the United States chocolate is about the most popular halloween candy.
What are Jockey Hollow’s favorites? Lions Pride conducted a survey of a number of Jockey Hollow students to find out.
Chocolate treats came in first. Twix Bars being the most popular candy followed closely by Kit Kat and Hershey Bars. Skittles and Candy Corn lead the non-chocolate treats in popularity. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Snicker Bars and Butter Fingers also were mentioned amongst our responses, as well as Nerds in the chocolateless category, So there you go, those are the popular halloween candies. What’s your favorite?

Holly’s sitting in her bedroom, a stack of books on her bedside table. Holly’s a twelve year old little girl. She’s not very fond on Christmas, even though she was born on Christmas Eve. She’s reading her second book of the night. “Done!” She exclaimed.
Her mom walked into the room. “Done huh. So let’s get caroling.” She said in an excited tone. “Uhggg! Mom! Why every year! I don’t have anything to wear!” Holly whined. Her mom said “Oh! What about that dress nana gave you last month. Isn’t it beautiful.” “That dress! I’ll look ridiculous!” Holly screamed.“Well you won’t if you’d let me do your hair, and where those pretty new sparkly shoes.” Her mom said positively.
After a few minutes of screaming and terror, Holly walked like a zombie into the living room. “You look great.” Holly’s dad said, and Holly’s little sister Hannah laughed until Holly walked into the kitchen and grabbed some cookies. “Mommy can we go now” Hannah said in that bratty squeaky little voice she has. “Come on guys let’s go!” She said.
They all walked out and went to Mrs.Robin’s house. They sang and sang for five minutes but Holly felt like it was an hour, and she sang horribly. Then they went to Dorthy’s house, Ally’s house, Mr.Jone’s house, and many more. Then they arrived at Jake’s house. “Yay!” Holly shouted. Did I really say that outloud Holly thought. Her dad gave her not so pleased look. “I...I..am excited to see his little sister, Amanda” Holly said. “Sure you are. Your just excited to see your boyfriend.” Hannah said. “Mooooom Tell her to stop!” Holly said.
Next they just opened the door and started singing, and of course since Jake was at the door she sang like an angel. After a few minutes they said bye, and Holly blushed and sang a bit better for the rest of the night.
The End

A Dragon’s Shriek, a burning Scale
Is only a fraction of this long, twisting tale.
Once a Destiny, now a mess
Will leave even the most lucid in distress.
...
A Dragon Master,
A brave at heart,
And one on the verge to fall apart.
The unlikely shall shatter, not leaving a trace
The one who is left will attempt to take their place
If they succeed, a Destiny reborn
If failure is present, they will be left forlorn
...
There is a way to save the chosen
Not by begging, or strong emotion.
Become the one you fear the most
Slay the Dragon, and see the ghost
Make a deal that shall not be broken
So that the Destined may be reawoken.

I woke up at the crack of dawn. It was raining and the wind was roaring. Lightning struck and startled me. Thunder boomed a few seconds later. I walked down stairs just like every morning. Rain crashed down on the roof above me. I went to a cabinet and pulled out some bread and butter. Lightning struck and I jumped in fear. I put the toast in my toaster and let it cook. As it cooked I walked over to a window and saw that a tree had fallen in the front yard. I also saw a rusal in the bushes outside.
At first it didn’t mean anything to me. But I opened the window just to get a better look at whatever it was. Lightning struck at the same time as thunder boomed. This time it was loud and it just plain scared me. Then I saw it again. That rusal in the bushes. Now I wanted to know what it was. Thunder and lightning struck again and I saw the same rusal.
I went over to my coat closet and took out my raincoat which I’d only ever worn twice. I waited for the lightning to strike and the thunder to boom. Once it did I opened my front door and walked out into the falling rain. I walked over to the bush that kept on moving. I went up to the bush and looked down, into it and saw something. When I saw it I knew that I would love it forever. It was a puppy. It had no collar and was dirty and soggy from all the rain and mud. I picked it up as soon as lightning struck again. I was scared and tried to break free of my grasp but I held it and hugged it. It soon calmed down and snuggled up against me. I brought it into my house and washed it. I kept it and loved it forever.
