What students may need individual or group counseling?
Students who are dealing with a life changing event such a loss of a loved one, divorce, abuse, experienced some form of trauma, or is exhibiting signs of a mental health disorder. Each situation will be considered individually to determine the level of care needed. If the case requires more intensive services than can be provided at the school level a referral can be made to an outside therapists per parent request.
When does a student need immediate crisis services?
When they are a harm to themselves or others. At this point we would activate the crisis plan and get them evaluated for more intense services. This may involve calling the parent to transport them for an evaluation or them being transported for an evaluation via emergency services. If a student is sent for an evaluation documentation of the discharge should be provided upon the students return to school so that we can best support the student within the school setting.
During the week of November 6–10, 2023, schools nationwide will celebrate National School Psychology Week (NSPW) to highlight the critical work school psychologists do to help students thrive. This is a time to recognize and show appreciation for school psychologists, who support students' learning and mental and behavioral health, promote positive and inclusive school climates, serve on school safety and crisis teams, and collaborate with families, teachers, and administrators to improve student outcomes.
The 2023 National School Psychology Week theme, "Let's Grow Together," is inspired by the importance of both personal and shared strengths in our growth as individuals and school communities in every season of life. The theme recognizes four aspects of growth that are fundamental to effective learning environments and to school psychologists' role in supporting student well-being and learning.
