Solar Eclipse: A solar eclipse happens when the moon is in between the Earth and the sun. In this position, the moon can block the light from the sun, casting a shadow on Earth.
If you’re on the part of the Earth that the umbra is hitting, you see a total solar eclipse. If you are on the part that the penumbra is hitting, you only see a partial solar eclipse.
There is a special kind of solar eclipse called an 'annular eclipse' where the moon blocks out all of the light of the sun except for a ring around the outside of the sun.
Lunar Eclipse: Earth can get in between the sun and the moon as well. When Earth is between the sun and the moon, Earth casts its shadow on the moon, causing a lunar eclipse.
