Civil Rights Movement in Virginia
Introduction[[nid:636]]The civil rights movement of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s was one phase in the longer black freedom struggle that began when the first Africans arrived in Virginia in 1619—and continues today. Because the most notorious events and horrific images were from the Deep South, Virginia's role in the movement tends to be overlooked. But in fact, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) filed more lawsuits in Virginia than in any other state.
NMAAHC
The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture. It was established by Act of Congress in 2003 following decades of efforts to promote and highlight the contributions of African Americans. The NMAAHC is a public institution open to all, where anyone is welcome to participate, collaborate, and learn more about African American history and culture. In the words of Lonnie G. Bunch III, founding director of the Museum, “there are few things as powerful and as important as a people, as a nation that is steeped in its history.” Any data that users post on this site or that the Smithsonian collects from this site is subject to our terms of use and privacy policies which can be found at: http://www.si.edu/termsofuse/ and http://www.si.edu/privacy/. The Smithsonian also monitors posts on YouTube at http://si.edu/Termsofuse#/user-gen
