Contributions and professions of our PhD graduates

Research, education and training 

Many of our former research students are successful career scientists who lead research groups, including Prof Luciano Beheregaray (Flinders U), Prof Alexandra Wilson (U Florida), A/Prof Adam Stow (Macquarie U), A/Prof Ryan Garrick (U Mississippi), Dr Katherine A Harrisson (La Trobe U), Dr Hernán Morales (U Copenhagen) and Dr Faith Walker (Northern Arizona University). 

Applied science - conservation, natural resource management and food security

Others chose to make contributions to agencies responsible for conservation, natural resource management and food security, including Dr Mel Lancaster, Senior Specialist - Arctic Species at WWF Canada, Dr Nev Amos, Senior Scientist with the Victorian environment department DELWP, Dr Val Caron, Team leader of CSIRO's Invertebrate Management team working in biological control of pest insects and weeds, Dr Shane Baylis, fish stocks modeller with CSIRO Marine, Dr Holly Sitters with Australian Wildlife Conservancy's national science team, coordinating research and monitoring of wildlife sanctuaries, and Dr Sean MacEachern, Vice President of Predictive Analytics and Computational Biology and Sensei Agriculture.  Steph Falk is Application Scientist/Consultant for Sequencing Approaches at the Max-Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics.  Nataly Hidalgo Aranzamendi is a data analyst working in environment and medicine.  Maiko Lutz works as an ecologist with the Glenelg Nature Trust, a not-for-profit environmental organisation engaged in on-ground conservation to benefit the environment and community.  Joe Zilko works as an environmental consultant. Diana Robledo-Ruiz is continuing her work in wildlife genetic management, in our group.  Will Mitchell is working as a conservation ecologist at La Trobe University.

Education focus and communications

Most of these PhD graduates contribute to research training and education among their other activities.  Giselle Perdomo established an urban agriculture education centre and conducts science linguistic translation, Adrian Dusting chose education as his primary focus, as Program Director for Science at the University of Canberra.  Likewise, Tara Draper is an educator at Deakin University.  Emma Razeng is a freelance environmental consultant and media researcher.

International awards

Luciano Beheregaray, Ryan Garrick and Katherine Harrisson all won the Genetics Society of Australasia Catcheside Prize for the best Australian PhD thesis in Genetics of their years.

Other significant awards include Ryan Garrick’s Genetics Society of Australasia’s Alan Wilton Early Career Researcher Award.
