Monash Sourced Placement Applications

MONASH SOURCED APPLICATIONS

Before you apply

Prepare your resume

Update your resume to a high standard. Your application is your chance to influence what type of opportunities you are presented for. It will be shared with industry partners so it’s important to show your skills, qualities and accomplishments. This is very important and will increase your chances of obtaining a placement. Your application is your chance to influence what type of opportunities you are presented for

You may wish to create a specific copy of your resume for your Industry Experience application, outlining any professional experience, volunteering/group activity, areas of study and interests.

Additional tips on writing your resume:

● Use a professional format and inject some personality (through colour, design/formatting).

● Outline your degree and major/specialisations at the beginning of the resume. Host organisations want to know what you are studying, what skills you have gained and if you have any specialised technical skills.

● Hosts will not favour a student with spelling/grammar mistakes in their resume, as it’s an indication of poor attention to detail. Ensure you review your resume for spelling and grammar errors.  This is very important and may impact the hosts decision to progress with your application.

● Save your resume as a PDF document and save in this format: LastName –Student ID –Resume e.g. Smith – 12345678-Resume.pdf

Career Connect can provide you with assistance on writing your resume through workshops and online assistance.

Please use Resume Check prior to submitting your resume. As your resume is going directly to a prospective host, you should aim for a score of 80% or over. Your application will be rejected if your resume is not acceptable.

Prepare answers to the proposal questions

As part of the application process, you will be asked to respond to a couple of proposal questions to confirm what you would like to get out of the Industry experience. Please read through the questions below and the response recommendations thoroughly. It is important that all questions are answered.

If successfully matched to a host organisation, your responses may be shared with the host organisation when we send your resume; we therefore encourage you to take time with your responses and make sure they are written clearly.

Describe what type of placement you are interested in and what you hope to achieve.

Please describe:

-    The kind of placement you would ideally like to undertake

-    The tasks/duties you would like to be involved in

-    The type of organisation or field you would be interested in working with

-    What you would like to get out of the internship experience

Identify 2-3 key skills you will bring to a potential host and how these skills will add value to the organisation. You will need to provide a description of the skills you have to offer, either from your studies or work experience. describe how you would use these skills within your ideal internship (as described above). This should include a mix of technical and interpersonal skills.

In this section you should be able to provide us with information on how your placement will support your career goals.

Please advise the suburb and country you are currently living in, and indicate if you have access to a vehicle or public transport to travel to your placement location.

Preparing for your interview

If you have applied for a Monash sourced placement and are eligible to undertake a placement, you will be required to complete a video interview. This step will require you to answer a series of short questions via an online one-way video interview platform. You’ll have a set time to review the question, followed by a couple of minutes to record your responses to each question. You’ll get a practice question at the start and some tips from the Industry Experience placements team to help prepare you.

Your video responses will be shared with prospect host organisations during the matching and shortlisting process, so it is very important you are well prepared and present yourself professionally. When completing this step, keep in mind:

·     Ensure you set yourself up in a tidy and quiet environment with no distractions or interruptions

·     Think about each question and provide your answers clearly and audibly (use a microphone if needed)

·     Present yourself professionally and confidently

·     Prepare yourself in the same way you would for a standard job interview (a good first impression can make a big difference)

Following review of your video responses, a host may wish to invite you to a further interview either onsite or online.

You can prepare for interviewing via the Industry Experience Interview360 tool. Interview360 provides you with a range of mock interviews you can take to really test your ability to come up with strong, confident, well-thought-through answers under time pressure. You’ll get instant feedback and advice, and every question you answer will make you a stronger candidate.
