In the third year Film, Television and Screen Studies unit, Stardom: Celebrity, Society and Power (AMU3127), students are required to conduct an extended piece of academic research on a film star of their choice. In developing these projects students must draw on academic concepts relating to film stardom. However, in previous offerings some students have struggled in their engagement with these ideas. To address this problem, three Guroo modules were created, covering the following areas: 1) ‘Stars as Celebrities, Professionals and Performers’; 2) ‘The Star Image in Film: Selective, Perfect and Problematic Fit’; 3) ‘Stardom and Work: Instrumental, Committed and Antagonistic Relations to Manufacture’. These modules introduce students to key concepts, take them through select examples, and include a series of questions and tasks to test their knowledge. Student feedback on the modules has been very encouraging and in response to the SETU question 'Which aspect(s) of this unit did you find most effective?’ several mention the Guroo modules: ‘The Guroo modules. They were easy to do and also effectively helped me learn things’; ‘The Guroo modules were fun and it wasn’t as stressful. Play to learn kinda concept. I love it’; ‘The Guroo modules were absolutely awesome’.
