Director
The MET hub is directed by Ir. Dr. Ooi Ean Hin, an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Monash University Malaysia, where he has been a faculty member since 2014.ย He is the Course Director for the Biomedical Engineering program and founded the Biomedical Engineering Modelling and Simulation (BEMS) research group, which he currently leads, and Monash MERCi; a research nexus bridging engineers with clinicians.
Dr. Ooi's primary research interest lies in applying engineering and technological solutions to address biological and medical challenges. With over 20 years of experience in computational modeling of biophysical and biomechanical problems, his passion for biomedical engineering has led to a diverse research portfolio. This includes mechanical and thermal treatment of cancer, ultrasound shear wave elastography for chronic kidney disease detection, glaucoma biomechanics, and ultrasound-mediated thrombolysis, among others.
He has published over 90 journal papers and co-authored a book "Model-based Approaches in Biomedical Engineering," published by the Institute of Physics Publishing. Dr. Ooi currently serves as the co Editor-in-Chief of the journal Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine.ย
He is also a founding member of the journal Mathematics in Medical and Life Sciences. He is a Chartered Engineer certified by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, UK, and a Professional Engineer certified by the Board of Engineers Malaysia.
Deputy director
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alpha Agape Gopalai is the Deputy Director of the MET hub. He is with the Department of Electrical and Robotics Engineering. Assoc. Prof. Alpha is a researcher in biomechanics, stands at the forefront of advancing our understanding of human movement. Holding a Ph.D. from Monash University, he has been working at unravelling the complexities of musculoskeletal dynamics. His research has been looking at applications involving measurement and assistive devices for use in sports biomechanics, injury prevention, rehabilitation and active ageing.
As an educator, Assoc. Prof. Alpha actively mentors a new generation of researchers. He also extends his influence beyond academia through community outreach programs. With ongoing projects involving virtual reality and soft robotics, he envisions a future where biomechanics not only informs our understanding of movement but also shapes innovative solutions for enhancing human performance and well-being.
His research interests focus on bio-mechanics, rehabilitation systems, and fall prevention techniques and the prospects of incorporating cyberphysical systems for remote monitoring. He is also currently investigating the potential of preventing and detecting risks of physical injuries and falls early on through use of models/digital twins and artificial intelligence.

Professor Ng Kwan Hoong serves as an External Advisor to the MET hub. He is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Biomedical Imaging, University of Malaya. He is a distinguished medical physicist and academician renowned for his contributions to the field of medical imaging and radiation oncology. Throughout his illustrious career, Em Prof Ng has made significant advancement in the development and application of advanced imaging techniques for cancer diagnosis and treatment.ย
In 2018, he became the first Malaysian scientist to receive the prestigious ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐ธ๐น๐ผ๐ฑ๐ผ๐๐๐ธ๐ฎ-๐๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฒ ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ, an award given by the International Organisation of Medical Physics (IOMP) to individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of medical physics. In 2020, Em Prof Ng was awarded the esteemed ๐ ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ธ๐ฎ ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ข๐๐๐๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ต๐ผ๐น๐ฎ๐๐๐ถ๐ฐ ๐๐ฐ๐ต๐ถ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Iman Yi Liao obtained her BSc, MSc, PhD all from the School of Computer Science andย Engineering, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xian, China, in 1996, 1999, and 2006 respectively. She was a visiting researcher in Chinese University of Hong Kong from July 2001 to Dec 2001, and in CVSSP, University of Surrey, UK from Dec 2003 to Sep 2004, respectively. She joined the School of Computer Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2008 as a Post-doctorate research fellow and subsequently became a Senior Lecturer there until 2012.ย
She became an Associate Professor in School of Computer Science, University of Nottingham Malaysia, since December 2012. Her main research interests lie in the field of Computer Vision and Machine Learning. She has worked on 3D reconstruction, 3D point cloud registration, 2D/3D semantic segmentation, and 2D/3D object recognition. Her recent research focuses on industrial applications where data are often collected with small sample size. She is particularly interested in solving those problems by innovating techniques such as transfer learning, domain adaptation, domain generalisation, adversarial training and generative models. She has also developed strong research interest in deep learning-based methods for engineering simulation with promising preliminary work.ย
Assoc. Prof. Iman has secured research grants from both government agencies and industry totalling 1.5 million Malaysia Ringgits, where her research has been primarily applied to agricultural domain (e.g., oil palm industry) and health domain (e.g., cancer research). ย
