It is important to be aware that there are different ways of thinking about sexual orientation and gender identity, including views embedded in belief and faith. Ideas about issues such as marriage equality, freedom of religion and freedom of expression, can and should be debated in the university context. This means teaching staff should be respectful of diverse, and sometimes opposing, opinions on issues related to gender and sexuality.
Developing an understanding of diverse perspectives on sexuality and gender through dialogue and other pedagogical approaches is an important part of being inclusive.
If you know in advance that your class is going to touch on issues where differences of opinion are likely, you should set up guidelines at the start of term for talking about sensitive issues and ensure that people know that they can express diverse opinions without being labeled homophobic or anti-religious. The priority should be on ensuring respectful dialogue.
