Preparing for the career fair

By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail! Prepare in advance and do your research so you will appear confident and informed. Students who ask relevant questions make the best impression with employers. Take a notebook and pen to make notes and write down contact details made during the event.

Attend the pre-career fair talk sessions

A series of talks have been organized from the 8th to 10th August to help you prepare for the Fair. This would include topics on LinkedIn, interview and resume writing skills. Register for your talks now via Career Gateway.

Research and networking

  • Find out about the organisations that are attending the event and do a research to understand which employer meets your career objectives. Make a list of those you want to speak to at the Fair and workshops that you wish to attend.
  • Think about why you want to work for a particular organisation as the employers may ask about this.
  • Prepare and practice a 30-second introduction that shows your strengths, skills, experience and interests.
  • Practice your networking skills.

What to ask

Make a list of questions and practice asking them. Focus on questions that will give you a better understanding of the organisation and provide you with information on:

  • The selection process and what the organisation is looking for
  • The application process
  • Current issues in the industry
  • Career pathways and the work role
  • Other graduate experiences

Sample questions

  • Can you advise on the organisation’s recruiting timetable? What is the next process?
  • Can you tell me what you look for in applications and what should be avoided?
  • Could you tell me the specific of skills, attributes and experience you are seeking?
  • What does “sound academic results” mean in your organisation? What are your academic requirements?
  • What duties does a new graduate perform? Can you give me examples of what is expected?
  • What training or staff development opportunities are provided to new graduates?
  • With my particular career interest, are there other people in the organisation who I should contact?
