Teaching Session

Active teaching approaches in physics and astronomy

In part 1 of the workshop, we will start with a brief overview of evidence-based practices in physics and astronomy education, followed by a brief overview of teaching transformation using Physics and Astronomy Collaborative Environment (PACE) studios at the School of Physics and Astronomy at Monash University. This will be followed by a break-out session on what impediments instructors encounter and what reservations they might have to engage with active teaching approaches, after which we will debrief and summarise our findings.

In part 2 of the workshop, the participants will work in groups to design methods for measuring the impact and gain feedback of their teaching practice from their students.

About the facilitator (Dr Jasmina Lazendic-Galloway):

Jasmina has been teaching and coordinating units at the School of Physics and Astronomy (SPA) for over 7 years. Jasmina is passionate about learner-centred practices and incorporating the excitement of scientific research into her undergraduate courses, and she have paved the way for active teaching practices at SPA. She is contributing to professional development of academics at Monash as an Academic Lead for Peer Review of Teaching.
