To determine the body’s ability to handle glucose. It may be used for screening and diagnosis of diabetes, pre-diabetes and gestational diabetes.
Fasting serum glucose prior to oral glucose consumption
2 hours postprandial collection for glucose measurement
Patient must fast at least 10 to 16 hours.
No food or beverage allowed during fasting except plain water.
Label sodium fluoride tube with two identifier (Name and identity no - NRIC/MRN)
label clearly sample type either FBS or 2HPP.
Step 1:
Fasting blood glucose is drawing into FBS labeled fluoride tube.
Step 2:
75g of glucose for adult OR 0.75g glucose/kg body weight up to maximum 75g for child, dissolved in 250 – 350ml of plain water. Patient should drink the glucose within 5 minutes.
(During the sampling period, the patient should rest quietly and may not smoke or consume any food/beverage.)
Step 3:
Further sample of blood is obtained at 120 minutes into 2HPP labeled fluoride tube after glucose load.
Note: All samples of OGTT shall be sent together to lab in order to register the samples under OGTT.
